The mission of the North American Riders Group is to unite professional riders, trainers and owners to use their collective strength to make show jumping in North America the best in the world.
Mission Statement
North American Riders Group to Focus Exclusively on the Sport of Show Jumping
“The North American Riders Group (NARG) announced today that its board of directors has voted unanimously to focus exclusively on the sport of show jumping. NARG was formed four years ago to provide a voice for riders, trainers and owners in North America. While many of the efforts and improvements that NARG has helped bring to the sport and its governance have benefited other disciplines, it has become
- bvious that NARG’s primary focus is and always will be Show
- Jumping. Furthermore, it has also become obvious that the sport of
show jumping in North America and around the world is heading in a different direction than the businesses of Hunters and Equitation in the United States. This difference in direction constitutes a philosophical divide that is inconsistent with NARG’s mission.”

And Finally
- Our biggest disappointment is no major progress
- n the mileage rule
- We applaud several show managers who have
taken advantage of the mileage rule exemption
- Our biggest opportunity to improve standards in
a mileage rule environment is the NARG Top 25
24
Top 25 of 2012
25
THE NARG TOP 25 – Our Biggest Initiative
- Top 25 list was implemented to improve quality of horse shows via
providing specific feedback and creating “friendly” competition
- We developed a quantitative questionnaire for evaluating horse shows
- While just our opinion, members will be able to choose between shows
using accurate, unbiased information regarding footing, stabling, security, venues, ring sizes, entry fees, prize money, prize-giving ceremonies, availability and proximity of hotels, quality of food service, etc.
26
Think of it as NARG’s Version of Consumer Reports
Evaluation Methodology
- NARG Board and members created a list of shows to evaluate
- Board approved NARG trained attendees evaluated the shows using
the guide book and form
- Evaluations were submitted to the board promptly after the event
- The NARG board reviewed each evaluation and discussed the findings
- Evaluation results were given as feedback to the event management
- All scores will be published today

Couple General Observations
- Overall scores improved A LOT!
– Average score from 71% to 80% in 3 years – Bottom score from 61% to 74% in 3 years
- Most show managers work well with NARG
- The fall indoor circuit is reinventing it’s splendor
- Canada and Mexico do very well – “The European model”
- But of concern, big circuits, even though they offer the most prize
money, prioritize quantity at the expense of quality – WEF is the perfect example and is heading in the wrong direction
