“Insist on Excellence”

An interview by Jimmy Torano, NARG Board Member, with George Morris, United States Show Jumping Chef D’Equipe

19

slide-20
SLIDE 20

The Challenge From George

20

1. Insist on excellence – don’t get caught in a “limited” mentality. This is true for all of us. But your students rely on you to push them up. 2. Always put quality first. Focus on quality and the money will come. 3. Big Barns and Big Shows are a reality. The key is to compartmentalize so quality can be

  • maintained. It’s easier said than done.

4. Be a life long learner. Constantly work on your own development opportunities. 5. Pay attention to the details – Shortcuts are a slippery slope! 6. There’s a real gap and money to made by re‐establishing a meaningful horse breeding program back in the U.S.. 7. Horse Show Managers must also put quality first. Don’t lower standards. Don’t fall into the Chicken and Egg Mentality.

THE NARG TOP 25 – Our Biggest Initiative

Top 25 list was implemented to improve quality of horse shows via providing specific feedback and creating “friendly” competition We developed a quantitative questionnaire for evaluating horse shows While just our opinion, members will be able to choose between shows using accurate, unbiased information regarding footing, stabling, security, venues, ring sizes, entry fees, prize money, prize‐giving ceremonies, availability and proximity of hotels, quality of food service, etc.

22

Think of it as NARG’s version of Consumer Reports

slide-23
SLIDE 23

Major Learning:

While these are our best competitions there is much room for improvement as reflected in the score Footing remains the key area for improvement across most

  • shows. The top shows all has installed better footing.

Consolidation of horses shows has pros and cons; the biggest con is the dilution of quality & specialness. It should always feel important to compete and win. NARG has much more impact when Show managers view us as partners with a common goal! Most view us that way. Some don’t.
