Lessons Learned

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Who is responsible for what

11

slide-12
SLIDE 12
  • Spend more time on the design phase
  • Do POCs first and test your key use cases
  • Avoid:
  • Big assumptions
  • Silo architectures
  • Taking shortcuts
  • Don’t forget the basics
  • Start automation as soon as possible and assign

enough time to test it

  • Automation should exist in stream and not only in one

team

  • Make sure there are no “Silos” between the teams
  • Phased migration rather than Big Bang
  • Leave the production environment for last

Lessons learned

12

slide-13
SLIDE 13
  • Keep on refactoring
  • Have multiple architecture sessions even after

design was signed off

  • Have an open mindset about changes and

leave room for changes

  • The customer needs a trusted advisor
  • Guide the customer and make sure the

customer is well informed about the impact, if they decide not to follow recommendations

  • Identify the impact of assumptions if they are

not getting resolved

  • It’s best to use Agile for automation

Lessons learned

13

slide-14
SLIDE 14
  • 1. Cloud based governance, cost controls, operations support, and reporting is an area
  • f focus prior to migration of production workloads.
  • 2. Cloud platforms are still evolving and both MS Azure and AWS are constantly

enhancing / changing their offerings which poses potential challenges for supporting production environments.

  • 3. Project dependencies should be carefully monitored to prevent project delays.
  • 4. Although pilots show cloud’s promise, managing the cloud environment needs new

skills and capabilities.

Benefits of Automation

There are technical benefits:

  • Cloud server replication and system copies
  • Continuous software delivery
  • Less complexity to manage
  • Faster resolution of problems & limit human errors

And there are business benefits:

  • Rapid deployment
  • Don’t repair, redeploy
  • More stable operating environments
  • Use automated testing to verify your infrastructure
  • Increased organisational effectiveness, more time to innovate

(e.g. more time is spent on activities associated with increasing the value of the product)
