Knowing and supporting every student….

The move from primary to secondary education can often be daunting and we strive to make the transition as smooth and successful as

  • possible. There are two elements at the heart of that transition:

students’ welfare and students’ learning. We meet, and get to know,

  • ur young people when they are in Year 6. At this time it has been

more challenging, but we have met with Year 6 teachers virtually to help us to get to know you better. You have also had opportunities throughout the year to the visit the school, too. The progress of the students across each Key Stage rests with the Directors of Learning for Key Stage 3 (Y7-9), Key Stage 4 (Y10-11) and the Director of Sixth Form Studies. Miss Cooke is the Director for Learning KS3 and will be supporting your child as they begin their learning at MCS. The Form Tutor oversees the learning of each student and is also responsible for such matters as progress in learning, attendance, behaviour, punctuality, appearance and health. The Form Tutor or Director of Learning is generally the best person to contact to discuss your child, either by telephone or by appointment.

Knowing and supporting every student….

...with learning We look closely at every child’s potential and set expectations high. Year 7 students are taught in mainly mixed ability groups. Beyond Year 7, groupings are devised to maximise learning. Our team of Additional Educational Needs specialists co-ordinate in-class support through individual and group coaching and mentoring. Work with Primary School colleagues and parents ensures that needs are assessed prior to Year 7 and met as soon as students enter our school.

Hwb - Google Classroom

How does Hwb help my child learn?

  • Hwb is the Welsh Government IT learning platform which provides every

learner and member of school staff with education materials to compliment and assist with learning. It has lots of free apps and software, virtual classrooms, and a massive bank of materials for use in the classroom or online with pupils. It can also be used to share schools’ work and join up with other schools on projects. Hwb was designed and built in Wales and is world-class. How do teachers use Hwb to teach?

  • Teachers can set up virtual classrooms and use applications like Google

Classroom and Microsoft Teams to set questions and see all the answers. They can use Hwb tools and resources to make lessons and set work. Resources are available by age group, across all subject areas. How will my child use Hwb?

  • It’s on the web, so using almost any computer or tablet. Your child can visit

hwb.gov.wales and click on resources to browse things of interest. We will provide a username and password in September to allow you to log into Hwb, and instructions on where we will be setting work (Google Classroom, Teams etc.). That way, work and information specific to your child will only be seen by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=48&v=N4jDiU2s- r0&feature=emb_title - a guide on how to access your hwb account.
