EXAMPLES Quarterly Visits to Washington Department of Corrections Re-Entry Division

  • Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle provides assistance to returning

citizens and presents opportunities for apprenticeships in construction.

  • Provides the following certifications: OSHA 10, HAZMAT, First Aid/CPR,

and Boom Lift.

  • Success story: Pre-apprenticeship program graduate is working as a

Carpenter’s Apprentice with B&B Builders for $40.17/hour, and is now a role model for young daughter.

Norfolk Technical Center Vocational School Core Skills Trainings

  • Urban League of Hampton Roads’ partnership with Norfolk Technical

School includes students receiving classroom credit for Pre- Apprenticeship soft skills training and transition services to full time employment with competitive salaries at the Norfolk Heating and Plumbing Company.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities:

  • Met with HBCU representatives to discuss their universities

becoming members of the HBCU Consortium for Registered Apprenticeship and working to facilitate partnerships with RA programs in Maryland.

  • Signed an MOA with the National Association for Equal

Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO).

  • Objective to launch the HBCU Consortium in September 2018.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

  • MOAs require a significant investment of time and resources to

develop new partnerships.

  • EEO trainings need to be streamlined; more “employer-friendly”

and less legalistic.

  • UL Affiliates have extraordinarily strong pre-apprenticeship

training and supportive services infrastructure for vulnerable communities; as a result, the pipeline between employers and apprentices was strengthened. Operational Changes to Implement

  • Further amplify the message nationally through the National

Urban League office.

  • Provide a menu of services for employers, and recognize when

supplemental resources may be needed.
