Ayrshire Growth Deal

  • Target coordinated investment, across Ayrshire, which will act as a powerful catalyst to

stimulate growth, increasing job opportunities and prosperity for Ayrshire, Scotland and the UK.

  • The £251.5M AGD is based around five broad themes: aerospace and space, energy,

marine, manufacturing & tourism.

  • UK & Scottish Government - £103 million each
  • Further funding of £45.5million from the three Ayrshire Councils.
  • 15 year delivery period to unlock around £300million of private

investment and 7,000 new jobs across a wide range of sectors.

NERD - National Energy Research Demonstrator

A catalyst to accelerate transition to the future 100% renewable climate positive energy system for power, heat and transport, delivering local and global social, economic, and environmental benefits. East Ayrshire will be an exemplar for Community Centred transition to the low carbon society; secure low cost green energy will be delivered by harnessing local assets and new market opportunities. Research, Innovation and STEM education networks will be attracted by the opportunities created by the NERD project. UK Government backed project (£17 million allocated) along with East Ayrshire Council funding (£7.5 million). Objectives of NERD:

  • Develop the Smart Integrated 100% Renewable Energy System of the future.
  • Create a nationally significant and distinctive Centre of Excellence for energy systems research and innovation.
  • Support development and delivery of new technical, business and user engagement models that support adoption of

the new energy systems and allow the region to be energy self sufficient.

  • Attract new business and economic activity to the area to achieve inclusive growth for the region.
  • Enable Ayrshire and Scotland to become a pioneer in renewable energy technology and contribute to Scotland

becoming a net zero society by 2045 or before.

What will NERD deliver?

  • 1. An International Centre of Excellence
  • State of the art workshop and office space for multi-disciplinary research
  • Innovation & incubation space for business and innovation support
  • Community scale “living lab” with engagement and demonstration spaces
  • Built to highest sustainability standards (BREEAM, Passivhaus, Smart 100% renewable) an exemplar building
  • Additional new build and retro-fit demonstrator houses to trial and showcase the new systems to the public and

industry

  • Low carbon travel hub (electric vehicles and active travel network)

It is anticipated that the NERD project will focus on 5 research hubs with labs and innovation support space as shown below:
