Effective, accurate and cost-effective control of humidity and temperature forms a critical element in a number of different commercial and industrial applications. As the inventors of desiccant wheel technology, Munters has unrivalled experience and expertise in the development of energy efficient solutions for a wide range of these technically challenging applications, including:

– Food production, processing and cold storage – Pharmaceutical manufacturing – Storage of archives, paper, defence equipment, etc – Corrosion control in suspension bridges – Lithium battery, electronics & semi-conductor manufacturing – Ice rinks and swimming pools – Paint finishing – Data centres – Etc.

In the following slides we will explore examples of just a few of these applications.

Customer Applications

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Problem: Moisture in the air brought into the cold store through access doors and staff breathing condenses and freezes, causing a dangerous build-up of ice and freezing fog. Solution: Munters IceDry removes problematic moisture, keeping the air and surfaces in the store and the adjacent areas clear of ice and fog. Outcome:

  • Improved safety (improved visibility and reduced risk of slipping)
  • Less contamination and easier to clean
  • Less damage from ice-scraping and cardboard boxes maintain their shape far better
  • Better performance of automated equipment and sensors
  • Higher speed of product movement (better visibility, no slipping, easier barcode reading)
  • Energy Savings - less latent load for the coils & higher efficiency of the evaporator (COP)
  • Allows more economic setting for refrigeration system & far fewer defrost cycles

Food Industry – Cold Storage

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Solution: Munters dehumidifiers mounted within the processing plant or associated HVAC system provide consistently low levels of humidity. Outcome:

  • Improved hygiene in silos, storage and transport
  • Consistent manufacturing process
  • Reduced coating times provide increased outputs
  • Blemish-free, consistent colour without spots
  • Reduced need for cleaning
  • Less waste and fewer, shorter shut-downs

Problems:

  • Many of the ingredients used for chocolate, including cocoa and

sugar, are vulnerable to humidity during storage and transport.

  • Fine chocolates move through cooling tunnels during

manufacture and high humidity will cause surface blemishes.

  • The processing of coated chocolates, such as “Smarties”, varies

significantly if temperature & humidity are not closely controlled.

  • Pralines are pressed in “stamps” which quickly clog if damp.

Food Industry – Chocolate Confectionary

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Solution: Munters mobile dehumidifiers positioned in segregated working areas remove moisture and maintains RH below 60% - the critical level above which corrosion accelerates rapidly. Outcome:

  • Surface corrosion dramatically reduced
  • Significant improvement in the aesthetic quality of paint finishes
  • Paint applied to a corrosion-free surface will last far longer
  • Life expectancy of the fabrication significantly increased

Problem: Shot-blasting, along with cutting, grinding and welding of steel during the construction and refurbishment of ships, leaves surfaces exposed to rapid corrosion and prevents the effective application of paint finishes.

Shipyards

slide-20
SLIDE 20

Solution: Munters Oasis Indirect Evaporative Air Coolers are used to create a circuit of cooling air that passes through the server cabinets. The returning air passes through a polymer heat exchanger, that is cooled by evaporating a film of water off the outside surfaces of the H/Ex tubes. Outcome:

  • Supply air and Outdoor airflow do not mix, preventing

contamination into DC space.

  • Temperatures in the server space are maintained below the

ASHRAE recommended limit of 27°C.

  • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.2
  • Energy savings of typically 65% versus traditional chillers.

Problem: Modern Data Centres consume vast quantities of energy and when using traditional chillers & AHU’s, over 40% of this energy is used in the cooling process. By 2020, globally data centres are expected to consume about 450 billion kW/h of power and be responsible for 2-3% of the world’s carbon emissions.

Data Centers

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Solution: Munters dehumidifiers are located at strategic points on the bridge, blowing dry air through the structure, including through the strands of the suspension cables. Outcome:

  • Life expectancy of existing bridges can be

extended significantly, providing huge savings in maintenance and capital replacement costs. Problem: Suspension bridges rely upon the structural integrity

  • f the steelwork and are typically located in areas with

a high moisture content. Steel suspension cables are particularly vulnerable.

Bridges

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Solution: Munters has decades of experience in providing optimised drying solutions for a wide variety of very specific Pharmaceutical processes, maintaining RH within very tightly defined limits. Outcome:

  • Product quality is consistently high.
  • No clogging of powders.
  • Tablets maintain 100% integrity.
  • Dramatic reduction in maintenance costs.

Problem: Many processes used within the Pharmaceutical industry are sensitive to moisture, including tablet production and the handling of powders. Tablets denigrate and powders clog and become sticky if humidity is not tightly controlled.

Pharmaceutical

slide-23
SLIDE 23

Solution: Munters mobile dehumidifiers are used to feed dry air into individual vehicles and/or complete storage areas, maintaining RH at an optimal level. It is far cheaper to maintain RH by removing moisture than by heating the space. Outcome:

  • Surface corrosion can be prevented.
  • Life expectancy of the equipment is substantially prolonged
  • Maintenance costs significantly reduced.
  • Equipment can be maintained in full working order, allowing

instant operational access. Problem: The demand for military equipment is very erratic. As a result, they need to be stored for prolonged periods, whilst maintaining full operational effectiveness. Corrosion of steel & electrical components and deterioration of fabrics & other materials must be prevented. Ammunition must be kept dry to prevent dangerous degradation.

Condensation

Protection of Military Equipment & Munitions

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Solution: No matter how tight the dry room where the lithium batteries are produced, several factors result in the generation of extra moisture load inside the production

  • area. Munters’ solutions can deliver ultra dry air (DP -60

~-70 ºC) that will guarantee a safe, stable humidity level. Outcome:

  • Ultra low dew point temperature air supply that guarantees

stable humidity levels and consistent production environment.

  • Large energy savings provided by the innovative design and

airflow, different from traditional systems.

  • Stable quality of the end product.
  • Large air supply that can cover large production areas,

preventing the construction of many separate rooms. Problem: Humidity control is essential in the production of lithium batteries due to the natural aggressive reaction of lithium to water (vapour). The humidity levels required are not seen anywhere on Earth: humidity must be as low as 0.0787 g/kg (DP -40ºC) or even lower.

Lithium Battery Production

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Solution: Munters DryCool technology treats the outside air required for ventilation and provides the moisture removal required, whilst reducing the total energy used. Outcome:

  • 30-40% Cooling/dehumidification savings
  • 15-20% Refrigeration savings in the summer months
  • No fog or frost in display cases
  • Provides lower dew point air at all operating conditions
  • Eliminates need for chilled water <46ºF (7.8ºC)
  • Can raise temperature set point without causing discomfort
  • Reduces waste and improves system efficiency

Problem: Refrigerated display cases in supermarkets represent 50% of a store’s total energy usage. When the humidity is controlled improperly it can lead to fog on case doors, frost on product, wet floors, mold and mildew growth, and cold/uncomfortable stores.

Supermarkets

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Solution: During operation, dehumidifiers are used to protect the Tower, the Nacelle and Electronic Cabinets. During manufacture & shipping the blades can also be protected. Outcome:

  • Installation and start-up processes are more predictable.
  • Life expectancy is significantly extended.
  • Reliability is far greater, reducing the need for expensive

maintenance and repairs. Problem: Wind Turbines contain unpainted steel components (including gearing, etc) and sensitive electrical equipment (transformers, controls, etc). During manufacture, transport, installation and

  • peration they are typically exposed to high moisture

conditions, often at sea.
