Effective, accurate and cost-effective control of humidity and temperature forms a critical element in a number of different commercial and industrial applications. As the inventors of desiccant wheel technology, Munters has unrivalled experience and expertise in the development of energy efficient solutions for a wide range of these technically challenging applications, including:
– Food production, processing and cold storage – Pharmaceutical manufacturing – Storage of archives, paper, defence equipment, etc – Corrosion control in suspension bridges – Lithium battery, electronics & semi-conductor manufacturing – Ice rinks and swimming pools – Paint finishing – Data centres – Etc.
In the following slides we will explore examples of just a few of these applications.
Problem: Moisture in the air brought into the cold store through access doors and staff breathing condenses and freezes, causing a dangerous build-up of ice and freezing fog. Solution: Munters IceDry removes problematic moisture, keeping the air and surfaces in the store and the adjacent areas clear of ice and fog. Outcome:
Solution: Munters dehumidifiers mounted within the processing plant or associated HVAC system provide consistently low levels of humidity. Outcome:
Problems:
sugar, are vulnerable to humidity during storage and transport.
manufacture and high humidity will cause surface blemishes.
significantly if temperature & humidity are not closely controlled.
Solution: Munters mobile dehumidifiers positioned in segregated working areas remove moisture and maintains RH below 60% - the critical level above which corrosion accelerates rapidly. Outcome:
Problem: Shot-blasting, along with cutting, grinding and welding of steel during the construction and refurbishment of ships, leaves surfaces exposed to rapid corrosion and prevents the effective application of paint finishes.
Solution: Munters Oasis Indirect Evaporative Air Coolers are used to create a circuit of cooling air that passes through the server cabinets. The returning air passes through a polymer heat exchanger, that is cooled by evaporating a film of water off the outside surfaces of the H/Ex tubes. Outcome:
contamination into DC space.
ASHRAE recommended limit of 27°C.
Problem: Modern Data Centres consume vast quantities of energy and when using traditional chillers & AHU’s, over 40% of this energy is used in the cooling process. By 2020, globally data centres are expected to consume about 450 billion kW/h of power and be responsible for 2-3% of the world’s carbon emissions.
Solution: Munters dehumidifiers are located at strategic points on the bridge, blowing dry air through the structure, including through the strands of the suspension cables. Outcome:
extended significantly, providing huge savings in maintenance and capital replacement costs. Problem: Suspension bridges rely upon the structural integrity
a high moisture content. Steel suspension cables are particularly vulnerable.
Solution: Munters has decades of experience in providing optimised drying solutions for a wide variety of very specific Pharmaceutical processes, maintaining RH within very tightly defined limits. Outcome:
Problem: Many processes used within the Pharmaceutical industry are sensitive to moisture, including tablet production and the handling of powders. Tablets denigrate and powders clog and become sticky if humidity is not tightly controlled.
Solution: Munters mobile dehumidifiers are used to feed dry air into individual vehicles and/or complete storage areas, maintaining RH at an optimal level. It is far cheaper to maintain RH by removing moisture than by heating the space. Outcome:
instant operational access. Problem: The demand for military equipment is very erratic. As a result, they need to be stored for prolonged periods, whilst maintaining full operational effectiveness. Corrosion of steel & electrical components and deterioration of fabrics & other materials must be prevented. Ammunition must be kept dry to prevent dangerous degradation.
Condensation
Solution: No matter how tight the dry room where the lithium batteries are produced, several factors result in the generation of extra moisture load inside the production
~-70 ºC) that will guarantee a safe, stable humidity level. Outcome:
stable humidity levels and consistent production environment.
airflow, different from traditional systems.
preventing the construction of many separate rooms. Problem: Humidity control is essential in the production of lithium batteries due to the natural aggressive reaction of lithium to water (vapour). The humidity levels required are not seen anywhere on Earth: humidity must be as low as 0.0787 g/kg (DP -40ºC) or even lower.
Solution: Munters DryCool technology treats the outside air required for ventilation and provides the moisture removal required, whilst reducing the total energy used. Outcome:
Problem: Refrigerated display cases in supermarkets represent 50% of a store’s total energy usage. When the humidity is controlled improperly it can lead to fog on case doors, frost on product, wet floors, mold and mildew growth, and cold/uncomfortable stores.
Solution: During operation, dehumidifiers are used to protect the Tower, the Nacelle and Electronic Cabinets. During manufacture & shipping the blades can also be protected. Outcome:
maintenance and repairs. Problem: Wind Turbines contain unpainted steel components (including gearing, etc) and sensitive electrical equipment (transformers, controls, etc). During manufacture, transport, installation and
conditions, often at sea.
Item What it does Energy Savings Achieved Oasis™ IEC
Munters Oasis products are a reliable and engineered design for cooling Data Centres while offering high energy savings and PUE's of less than 1.05
DesiCool
A Green Alternative to traditional AHU, using waste heat from the building to provide comfort cooling and humidity control with no refrigerant.
Quantum Rotor Design
Removing large quantities of moisture with one pass of air, typically up to 12 g/kg. The increase in heat is transferred to the process air giving consistent hot dry air regardless of ambient conditions. So removing the need for pre cooling and saving energy due to reduced post heating.
Energy Recovery Purge
An additional sector in the rotor cassette is created to take residual heat in the rotor after reactivation back into the reactivation air stream as sensible heat.
PowerPurge*
Utilizes the heat in the waste air in the reactivation air stream and residual heat in the rotor to give this back to the reactivation supply.
DryCool
Generates reactivation heat with a heat pump that cools process air. Lowest energy solution for treatment of fresh air.
