  16. Customer Applications Effective, accurate and cost-effective control of humidity and temperature forms a critical element in a number of different commercial and industrial applications. As the inventors of desiccant wheel technology, Munters has unrivalled experience and expertise in the development of energy efficient solutions for a wide range of these technically challenging applications, including: – Food production, processing and cold storage – Pharmaceutical manufacturing – Storage of archives, paper, defence equipment, etc – Corrosion control in suspension bridges – Lithium battery, electronics & semi-conductor manufacturing – Ice rinks and swimming pools – Paint finishing – Data centres – Etc. In the following slides we will explore examples of just a few of these applications.

  17. Food Industry – Cold Storage Problem : Moisture in the air brought into the cold store through access doors and staff breathing condenses and freezes, causing a dangerous build-up of ice and freezing fog. Solution : Munters IceDry removes problematic moisture, keeping the air and surfaces in the store and the adjacent areas clear of ice and fog. Outcome : • Improved safety (improved visibility and reduced risk of slipping) • Less contamination and easier to clean • Less damage from ice-scraping and cardboard boxes maintain their shape far better • Better performance of automated equipment and sensors • Higher speed of product movement (better visibility, no slipping, easier barcode reading) • Energy Savings - less latent load for the coils & higher efficiency of the evaporator (COP) • Allows more economic setting for refrigeration system & far fewer defrost cycles

  18. Food Industry – Chocolate Confectionary Problems : • Many of the ingredients used for chocolate, including cocoa and sugar, are vulnerable to humidity during storage and transport. • Fine chocolates move through cooling tunnels during manufacture and high humidity will cause surface blemishes. • The processing of coated chocolates, such as “Smarties”, varies significantly if temperature & humidity are not closely controlled. • Pralines are pressed in “stamps” which quickly clog if damp. Solution : Munters dehumidifiers mounted within the processing plant or associated HVAC system provide consistently low levels of humidity. Outcome : • Improved hygiene in silos, storage and transport • Consistent manufacturing process • Reduced coating times provide increased outputs • Blemish-free, consistent colour without spots • Reduced need for cleaning • Less waste and fewer, shorter shut-downs

  19. Shipyards Problem : Shot-blasting, along with cutting, grinding and welding of steel during the construction and refurbishment of ships, leaves surfaces exposed to rapid corrosion and prevents the effective application of paint finishes. Solution : Munters mobile dehumidifiers positioned in segregated working areas remove moisture and maintains RH below 60% - the critical level above which corrosion accelerates rapidly. Outcome : • Surface corrosion dramatically reduced • Significant improvement in the aesthetic quality of paint finishes • Paint applied to a corrosion-free surface will last far longer • Life expectancy of the fabrication significantly increased

  20. Data Centers Problem : Modern Data Centres consume vast quantities of energy and when using traditional chillers & AHU’s, over 40% of this energy is used in the cooling process. By 2020, globally data centres are expected to consume about 450 billion kW/h of power and be responsible for 2-3% of the world’s carbon emissions. Solution : Munters Oasis Indirect Evaporative Air Coolers are used to create a circuit of cooling air that passes through the server cabinets. The returning air passes through a polymer heat exchanger, that is cooled by evaporating a film of water off the outside surfaces of the H/Ex tubes. Outcome : • Supply air and Outdoor airflow do not mix, preventing contamination into DC space. • Temperatures in the server space are maintained below the ASHRAE recommended limit of 27°C. • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.2 • Energy savings of typically 65% versus traditional chillers.
