Why are we here?

  • Incredibly important time for your son/ward.
  • Decisions which could impact on their future.
  • The transition from KS3 to KS4 can be a

challenging time and the aim of Greenacre Academy is for all students to find a pathway that enables them to reach their potential.

GCSEs…..GET READY!

  • KS3 directly prepares students for KS4

– Year 7/8/9 are not ‘wasted’ years

  • Progress (not necessarily grades)
  • More rigorous exams at end of the

course

  • Fewer bite-size questions
  • Extended writing tasks
  • Less coursework
  • Fewer Higher/Foundation papers

SLIDE 6

A bit more detail?

To achieve the EBACC award, students must achieve a minimum of a grade 5 in:

  • GCSE Mathematics
  • GCSE English Language (Literature is not an

alternative for this award)

  • 2 GCSEs in Science subjects (Combined Science)
  • GCSE in either History or Geography
  • GCSE in either French or Spanish

Grading system

Progress 8 measure

The new Attainment and Progress 8 measures should be fairer, more accurate and will encourage students to study a wider range of academic subjects through to the end of Key Stage 4. That must be a positive step forward, both for school’s trying to improve school effectiveness and more importantly for ensuring that all students have access to the best education possible.

Pathways

  • All students have been placed on one of three

learning pathways based

  • n

their current attainment and their teachers knowledge of how they work.

  • The aim of the learning pathway is to give each

student the best chance of achieving a good set of exam results by suggesting qualifications that suit their academic ability.

  • Because students are doing the right qualification

the lessons will have pace, challenge and success.

BTEC and OCR Qualifications

To help ensure students have the best chance of success the number of qualifications a student is likely to achieve varies depending on the pathway

  • They offer more practical experiences that are often

lacking in more traditional routes such as GCSEs

  • Progress is measured throughout the course as students

complete assignments in a range of units

  • There will only be a short written exam on the new BTEC

courses.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Next steps

  • Students are asked to discuss their options with their parents,

teachers and other students who are on the courses.

  • Unfortunately we may not be able to match every students

desired combination of subjects but every effort will be made to support students towards alternative subjects.

  • If insufficient numbers of students choose a subject it may not

be possible to run the subject. In these circumstances students will be asked to select an alternative.

  • Students will need to rank their choices in order of preference,

we will always try to accommodate first choices .

  • You can only choose a subject once
