Contents - Overview

∗ Elementary geometric objects (lines, angles, polygons, circles, polyhedra) and their properties. ∗ Measurement (distance, area, volume). ∗ Randomness and probability. ∗ You will need to draw geometric objects, so ruler, compass, protractor will be used in some classes and exercises. ∗ Learning to ⋄ use geometric language, ⋄ reason, ⋄ present arguments will be a core component of the course.

Working methodology

∗ For Geometry, some videos must be seen before each theory session. ∗ Before each theory class:

  • 1. you should see the video that will be proposed.
  • 2. you should solve the problems that are proposed in the

videos. ∗ In the theory classes we will :

  • 1. solve questions that you may have.
  • 2. revise some details that are difficult or important.
  • 3. solve the problems that are proposed in the videos.
  • 4. work out during the class some additional exercises.

Working methodology

∗ What I do not pretend is:

  • 1. that students work more that with a traditional

approach.

  • 2. go fast, in order to see more content.

∗ This methdology is known as “flipped classroom” ∗ We will use a tool for real time interaction: Socrative

Evaluation

∗ Continuous evaluation (you can apply for final evaluation in some circunstances during the first two weeks of the course).

  • Final exam: 40 %.
  • 60 %, continuous evaluation, according to:
  • Parcial exam: 20 %.
  • Weekly problem solving tests: 20 %.
  • Monitoring student’s participation in classes: 20 %.

On line material

∗ Some online material that I highly recommend:

  • 1. “How to learn math”. Jo Boaler, Stanford University.

https://www.youcubed.org/online-student-course/

  • 2. “Learning how to learn”. Coursera. 4 weeks course.
  • 3. “The 6 habits of successful students”.
