Separating from Rome
From 1520-1521 Luther wrote three great works: "Address to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation" "The Babylonian Captivity" "The Freedom of the Christian Man" The pope excommunicated Luther - Exurge Domini (Luther burned this “Papal Bull” in the fire)
The Diet of Worms (1521)
- Has nothing to do with eating
worms but was unpleasant thing
- A Diet is a civil trial and it was in
the city of Worms, Germany
- Luther appeared before Holy
Roman Emperor Charles V
- He refused to recant and was
declared a “wanted man” (outlaw)
- Elector Frederick the Wise had
Luther kidnapped for his own good
At Wartburg Castle (1521-1522)
Luther was kept against his will in this “Kingdom of the Birds” He was disguised as “Knight George” (Junker Jörg) Here he translated the New Testament into German (Not from the Latin Vulgate but from the original Greek)
