  1. Mahalo for coming tonight

  2. Tonight’s Presentation Reaching 100% Renewable Energy Updates Company Updates 2

  3. Reaching 100 Percent Renewable Energy for Moloka‘i Reporting back to the community August 15, 2017

  4. Renewable Energy by 2045 Hawai‘i has the most ambitious energy goals in the nation We’re moving forward to help Hawai‘i achieve this historic goal

  5. 5 Over a period of three months we hosted 13 roundtable sessions on Moloka‘i We talked about the State’s goal of reaching 100% renewable energy for Hawai‘i by 2045 And the potential for Moloka‘i to be first by 2020 5

  6. Battery project on Moloka‘i Why Moloka‘i by 2020? 100% to RPS As a small island grid with the highest amount of solar penetration in the state, we can demonstrate different pilot projects to enable more solar on the island while also leading the state’s 2045 goal • High interest in renewable energy resources • Solutions already being looked at and implemented to address 6 existing system challenges

  7. 7 We shared Information on … Meeting Moloka‘i’s Power Needs Today Moloka‘i’s Energy Future Today’s Renewable Options 7

  8. 8 We said that Moloka‘i may be able to reach 100% renewable energy by 2020 And we wanted to know what you thought about that possibility 8

  9. 9 We asked those who attended our roundtable sessions . . . From your experiences and perspective What would you like us to know? What concerns do you have or want us to know that your community has? 9

  10. 10 We met with different groups And sent an invitation to all of our 3,200 customers to attend any of our three general public sessions across the island 10

  11. 11 By 2045 – the year Hawai‘i will be 100% renewable – 28 years would have gone by Today’s teens will be adults A 17-year-old today will be the 45-year-old of 2045 And in 2020, that 17-year-old will be 20-years-old 11

  12. 12 So we asked teens for input Moloka‘i High Aka‘ula School Moloka‘i Middle School 12

  13. 13 We collected concerns and suggestions And invited participants to tell us their preferences on the different types of renewable energy options 13

  14. 14 We’ve compiled the input received And we’re here tonight to share them with you and what our next steps will be 14

We noted 475 concerns and comments from “No the roundtable exporting sessions off island.” “Are solar panels recyclable or end “Reliability is up in landfill?” “Holistic plan Important.” needs “Burning waste conservation to generate energy included.” can affect people with asthma.” 23 Examples

  24. Financing • Third-party funding sources • Grants, tax credits 24

  25. REACHING Next steps A combined team of Maui Electric and Hawaiian • Electric planning staff are working to incorporate this feedback into options. We’ll return to the community with these options to • discuss by early next year. 25

  26. Preparing the Grid for More Renewables

  27. Preparing the Grid for Significant Renewable Generation Developing a Roadmap Selection Criteria for potential consultants Utility experience in operations Experience with small island grids • Capable to address similar challenges facing Moloka‘i Reliability Protection 27

  28. Preparing the Grid for Significant Renewable Generation Hydro Tasmania Established 102 year old company Consultant selected to develop Experienced with small island grids roadmap for grid improvements Developer, owner and operator of projects on: to bring Moloka‘i forward to King Island, Australia 100% renewable energy Flinders Island, Australia 28

  29. Update on current projects Preparing the Grid for Significant Renewable Generation TripSavers Replaces slower reacting fuses Smart Fault Current Indicators Reduces field personnel time in locating fault 29

  30. Update on current projects Preparing the Grid for Significant Renewable Generation Moloka‘i Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Assists with system stabilization Mitigates fluctuating distributed PV production Moloka‘i Load Bank (future ) Stabilizes our electrical system Ensures better reliability 30
