Sokołowsko

Sokołowsko welcomes artists working in many artistic disciplines including music, soundart, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, film, performance, theatre as well as curators. One of the program tasks is to support new, creative curatorial practices relating to the topic of sound and music as well as the search for meaning in the intersection of art and

  • technology. The social and ecological context of

a village in a natural environment can also be explored. The different spaces of the old Sanatorium and its surroundings offer multiple possibilities for creation, from normal studio work, to site- specific installations in the renovated or ruined areas and in the park or forest.

Sokołowsko is a calm picturesque mountain village in Lower Silesia, close to Wałbrzych (15km), near the Polish- Czech border. It is surrounded by the Suche Mountains and the lush forests of the Landscape Park. Sokołowsko is a unique village with interesting history and rich cultural

  • heritage. It was first

mentioned as a German town called Goerbersdorff in 1357 and was most likely founded by Benedictine monks.

Sokołowsko

In 1855, it became home to the world’s first sanatorium specialised in treating tuberculosis which was active until mid 1950s.

The In Situ Contemporary Art Foundation was founded December 2004 by Bożenna Biskupska and Zygmunt Rytka, both artists and cultural activists, and Zuzanna Fogtt, curator and cultural producer. The goal of the foundation is to create a space for art projects and diverse interdisciplinary creative processes. A place to meet and explore, confront viewpoints, and exchange thought processes and experiences. Equally important is popularizing innovative artistic approaches and supporting diverse forms of creative activity.

Brehmer’s Sanatorium and In Situ Foundation

In 2007, The In Situ Contemporary Art Foundation acquired the premises of the former Dr Brehmer’s Sanatorium, with the intent of rebuilding it - after a 2005 fire destroyed the historical monument, and making it a base of

  • peration for its various activities.

Creative spaces in the castle

Sokołowsko offers various spaces for artistic work for the residents. The majority of working rooms are located in the renovated part of Dr Brehmer’s sanatorium, but the spaces of the sanatorium’s ruins are also for use (black room). On the ground floor of the building there is a large exhibition hall. The area of 140 m2 can be used for different purposes (exhibition). Climbing up the staircase in the tower you walk past working rooms of different sizes, whose windows look out onto different sides of the world. The last floor of the building is a viewing terrace, from where you can admire the mountains and forests. Last but not least, the basement also provides a vast area for all kinds of work.

Residency conditions

The duration of a residency in Sokołowsko can be arranged individually. It can last from 2 weeks up to 3 months, anytime in the year. It is

  • pen for individual artists as well as small

groups. Artists will be hosted at the Villa Rosa, where there are 8 bedrooms for two, three or four people with independent bathrooms. Shared spaces include kitchen and dining room situated at the ground floor. There is also a sunny terrace that looks out on the forest. Artists are free to work on anything they feel

  • like. We value research and experimentation,

and are happy to offer time and space for trial and errors, and elaboration of new ideas. We can also arrange curatorial residencies with a person of the artist’s choice.
