POPULATION GROWTH • The Municipality considers population growth as a key indicator for development potential • The development potential of the population can result in attracting more development • The development may result in an increase demand for development • Current population is at approximately 59 562 with an annual average population growth of 3.30%

POPULATION GROWTH CONT… • In comparison, the annual average growth of Kgetlengrivier Municipality has exceeded that of the District which is at 2.26% while Madibeng LM is at 3.18% and Rustenburg LM is at 3.11% • This sharp annual increase calls for attention to respond to the developmental needs of the area • At least 67.9% of Municipal population is aged between 15-65 years old and classified as potential economically active population

SOCIO ECONOMIC • Low level of education • Semi skilled labour • Challenge on transport accessibility, negatively affecting peoples movement and production • Income- An indicator of buying power. • Majority of salary earning people 25% are earn around R20 000 per month. • Over 65.3% reside in a permanent formal structure (house) • High unemployment rate

SOCIO ECONOMIC CONT… • At least 81.7 % employed in informal sector • Mining is seen as main economic sector with at least 23.5% with trade rating at 19.8% and finance at 17.7% • Internal observation indicates that Agriculture has more potential to contribute to local economy even though the research shows that it only contributes about 8.8% to the local economy

SOCIO ECONOMIC CONT… • Agriculture in terms of sector contribution is the least but at about 12.4% in terms of employment contribution after 25.2% of mining and 24.6% of trade sectors • Agriculture, Mining and trade are seen as key economic strength of the Municipality • Some advantages are availability of rich soil(Agriculture), Water availability(agriculture), availability of Slate(Mining) and locational position-N4 route (Tourism & Trade)

  7. LED PROJECT PRIORITISATION • As per the current LED strategy for the local municipality, the following projects were identified for implementation. Most or all of these projects have never been implemented due to lack of funds • AGRICULTURE SECTOR: The intention is to give proper support to up coming individual farmers and local agricultural cooperative • PROJECT: Introduction of rural agricultural hubs • PROJECT: Establishment of Agro Tourism • PROJECT: Establishment of Agro processing plant(s)

  8. LED PROJECT PRIORITISATION • SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: To encourage local communities to use recyclable material for economic benefits • PROJECT: Establishment of community waste recycling cooperative(s)

LED PROJECT PREORITASATION • COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT: The intension is to create conducive environment to attract businesses and to ensure the existing businesses continue to exist in our local area and to market our municipality as the potential area for commercial development • PROJECT: Development of Koster node Master Plan • PROJECT: Development of Swartruggens node development plan

LED PROJECT PRIORITISATION • TOURISM: The objective is to promote local municipality as the preferred tourist destination • PROJECT: Development of tourist route • PROJECT: Promotion of Koster dam as activity area for caravan park, leisure & recreation i.e Fishing, other water sport • PROJECT: Promotion of Lindley’s spoort dam as activity area for Caravan park, leisure & recreation

LED PROJECT PRIORATISATION • OTHER PROJECTS: • PROJECT: Market Koster golf club as a sporting destination (golf and park run activities) • PROJECT: Market Koster rugby stadium as sporting venue for high level integrated sporting codes • PROJECT: Feasibility study on development of logistic hub in both Koster and Swartruggens nodal points
