Landfill Operations Timeline
- 1942 - District received permit from War Department to
burn trash on approximately 20 acres of Kenilworth Park
- 1968 - In February, open-burning operations ended
- 1970 - All landfill operations end in January (soil cover
placed and seeded)
- 1980 - Recreational areas of Kenilworth Park opened

Future Use
Kenilworth Park South
- NPS will manage as a Natural Resource Recreational
Area (wildlife habitat and recreational use such as birder, cyclist, walker [Anacostia River Trail Use]). Kenilworth Park North
- Active recreational use (i.e. athletic fields) will
continue.
- Congress directed NPS to transfer administrative
jurisdiction of KPN to the District (PL 108-335 § 334) to be used “for the provision of public recreational facilities, open space, or public outdoor recreational
- pportunities.”
