What is the main Problem?

Algae Blooms caused by poor water quality.

  • Too much Nitrogen
  • Too much Phosphorus.
  • Not enough Oxygen

This is mainly from rotting waste that uses oxygen from the water and produces Nitrogen & Phosphorus

Where does the rain water go?

50% into soil

40% back to air 10% to streams

How does it get there? Example of RDC stormwater network

7

What urban causes contribute to this?

  • Dirty Stormwater

– Sediment discharge – Washing waste water – Dumping rubbish into drains – Natural vegetation discharged to waterways

SEE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES

Polluted water comes from many forms of everyday activity

Check where you wash out your paint brushes. Waterbased paint waste can go to the sewer. Check with suppliers if paint waste can go back to them

Sewage Overflows are another problem

These mainly occur in the urban area. Main causes:

  • Fat from kitchen

wastes

  • Rubbish put down

drains & manholes

Call RDC ASAP

Other contributing Factors

Rotting vegetation

Sediment Layer & rotting vegetation.

  • In the last 120yrs

– Lake Rotorua has developed a layer of 700-800mm – Lake Rotoiti has a layer of 100mm.

Measured from the Tarawera eruption ash layer.

Complaint Calls are Very Important

WHO DO YOU CALL? Rotorua District Council Ph 348 4199 – 24 hours

  • YOUR JOB

Name, address, ph No. spill details, location,

  • Investigation and sampling are an

important part of recovering clean-up costs and infringement fines.
