What is Sonar?

  • Sonar was invented in 1906

and is short for sound navigation and ranging

  • Sonar is a system that

measures the ocean's depth and detects objects by sending

  • ut sound pulses and then

measuring them after they reflect off the objects and return

How is Sonar used?

  • Sonar is used to detect underwater hazards to

navigation, search and map objects on the seafloor and map the seafloor itself

  • It is also used to develop nautical charts which are

maps that depict the configuration of the shoreline and seafloor

How does sonar work?

  • A Sonar device will send out a sound wave below

surface and then listen for echoes to return

  • Sonar can be passive or active
  • Passive is used by the navy to detect submarines or

ships while active is used to measure distance with sound

  • They can tell how far away an object is by recording

the time it takes for sound to travel there and back

How has Sonar progressed throughout the years?

  • Lewis Nixon invented the first ever Sonar type listening

device in 1906 and used it as a way to detect icebergs

  • In 1915 the first sonar device used to detect submarines

was created which helped to influence later designs

  • As Sonar continues to progress we are able to get a

better and more accurate map of the ocean floor
