The Marmara area corresponds to the submerged section of the North-Anatolian Fault => Necessity to deploy underwater instrumentation to improve the characterization of the near-fault seismicity
MARSITE KICK-OFF MEETING WP8 Presentation ISTANBUL, December, 19-20, 2012
1) Discovery of very characteristic tremors, 44 minutes prior to Izmit 1999 earthquake 2) Finding that gas reservoirs are connected to the Main Marmara fault zone
=> new perspectives for underwater monitoring
Are seismic tremors associated with clear anomalies in gas emission activity ? If yes, then : more criteria to evaluate the probability of occurrence of an impending earthquake

Collect multi-parameter time-series through three repeated (every 6 months) sea-based cruises, using existing autonomous seafloor observatories (SN-4, piezometers, OBSs, acoustic gas bubble detectors, etc.) TL : G. Marinaro/G. Giovanetti (INGV), Participants : KOERI, IFREMER, ITU, CNR- ISMAR
autonomous, multi-parameter seafloor observatories
(already used in the same area in previous projects) to monitor the possible interactions between fluids and seismicity
i) to constrain the origin of the vented fluids and the possible interaction processes; ii) to the multi-parameter data sets from long-term time series

Seabed, continuous seismological monitoring and integration of multi-parameter datasets from cabled (KOERI’s) and autonomous systems (T, p, seis) TL: C. Gürbüz (KOERI), Participants: IFREMER, INGV, ITU, CNRS 1)To improve methods for the high resolution characterization of the near-fault micro- seismicity, based on KOERI’s permanent network and on autonomous stations 2)To implement specific methods to detect earthquake doublets, slow slip events and seismic tremors 3)To integrate land-based and marine-based seismic networks 4)To process the multi-parameter dataset (seismic signals, sea-bottom water pressure and temperature variations) collected by the submarine KOERI network , for analysis in Task 3

Multi-parameter data analysis TL: P. Henry (CNRS), Participants: KOERI, IFREMER, INGV, INERIS 1) To analyze time series of fluid parameters (fluid pressure in the sediment and at the seafloor, bubble flux, fluid velocity, fluid chemical composition), 2) To examine possible correlations with micro-seismicity and strain. 3) To analyze environmental data (pressure, temperature, salinity, current velocity) from the KOERI’s permanent, cabled network , to : i) correct the datasets from possible environmental effects and ii) to calibrate models of normal mode oscillations of the water column.

Prepare the next generation of seafloor observatories for geo-hazard monitoring TL: F. Italiano (INGV), Particants: KOERI, IFREMER, ITU, DAIMAR 1) To improve the existing sea-floor equipments in terms of the amount of contemporary active instruments, their interlink with “smart sensor” capacities (threshold detection, triggering) and the quality of the collected data. 2) To design, build and possibly deploy new generation components including real-time data collection systems (if logistical and budgetary conditions allow it) 3) To integrate the skills of DAIMAR company with other MARSITE partners 4) To share the collected information with the other tasks
