Objectives

  • To implement an integrated approach based on

multiparameter seafloor observatories, to continuously monitor the micro-seismicity along with the fluid expulsion activity within the submerged fault zone

  • To find robust and multiparametric methods for

implementing early warning strategies in the near future.

MARSITE KICK-OFF MEETING WP8 Presentation ISTANBUL, December, 19-20, 2012

Scientific background (1/2)

The Marmara area corresponds to the submerged section of the North-Anatolian Fault => Necessity to deploy underwater instrumentation to improve the characterization of the near-fault seismicity

3

slide-4
SLIDE 4

MARSITE KICK-OFF MEETING WP8 Presentation ISTANBUL, December, 19-20, 2012

Scientific background (2/2)

1) Discovery of very characteristic tremors, 44 minutes prior to Izmit 1999 earthquake 2) Finding that gas reservoirs are connected to the Main Marmara fault zone

=> new perspectives for underwater monitoring

Are seismic tremors associated with clear anomalies in gas emission activity ? If yes, then : more criteria to evaluate the probability of occurrence of an impending earthquake

The situation of underwater monitoring in the Sea of Marmara

  • KOERI presently operates an unique network of 5 cabled,

seafloor observatories (SBOs) including : Broad-Band OBSs, accelerometer, sea bottom temperature, pressure gauge

  • European effort to collect geochemical and geophysical data

from the immediate vicinity of the fault zone, using multi- parameter, autonomous sea-floor observatories

http://www.esonet.marmara-dm.itu.edu.tr/

  • MARSITE : an unique opportunity for coordinating efforts

towards an improved, integrated monitoring of the submarine section of the NAF

Specific objectives WP8 - Task 1

Collect multi-parameter time-series through three repeated (every 6 months) sea-based cruises, using existing autonomous seafloor observatories (SN-4, piezometers, OBSs, acoustic gas bubble detectors, etc.) TL : G. Marinaro/G. Giovanetti (INGV), Participants : KOERI, IFREMER, ITU, CNR- ISMAR

  • 1. To complement KOERI’s permanent network with an additional network of

autonomous, multi-parameter seafloor observatories

  • 2. To collect geophysical and geochemical data using existing submarine equipments

(already used in the same area in previous projects) to monitor the possible interactions between fluids and seismicity

  • 3. to collect water samples through repeated oceanographic cruises:

i) to constrain the origin of the vented fluids and the possible interaction processes; ii) to the multi-parameter data sets from long-term time series

QUESTION :

  • Is the Istanbul-Silivri fault segment creeping freely ? At

what rate ?

  • Or is the fault segment blocked, accumulating elastic

deformation that may be released during a next major and damaging earthquake ?

Additional, non-contractual, specific objective within WP8 - Task 1
