TIPS FOR STAYING IN STATUS • Maintain a full course of study at all times; • No more than three (3) credit hours of coursework delivered via “online” or “distance” may be used toward minimum enrollment requirements; • Do not exceed 20 hours of on-campus employment in any one week; • Do not work or volunteer off-campus without checking with ISS first; • Update your Address every time it changes and within 10 calendar days of the change; • Review the ISS Website.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS • Graduate Students with a Graduate Staff Appointment: • Fall and Spring, minimum 6 credit or research hours; • Summer minimum 3 credit or research hours; • Graduate students without a Graduate Staff Appointment: • Fall and Spring, minimum 8 credit or research hours; • Summer minimum 6 credit or research hours;

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS (ISS) Last year more than 9,000 students representing 133* nations and 1642 international faculty and staff representing 78* nations were a part of the Boilermaker family. ISS is committed to the internationalization of Purdue University by providing appropriate services and support to international clientele and various University departments and offices. ISS seeks to enhance the academic, cultural, and social pursuits of students and scholars from abroad through knowledge and expertise in programming, engagement, immigration, and advising.

  9. INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP PROGRAM The International Friendship Program is a program offered through International Student Services which connects new international Boilermakers with local community hosts for friendship and support as they transition to living in Greater Lafayette.

  10. CENTER FOR INTERCULTURAL LEARNING MENTORING ASSESSMENT AND RESEARCH (CILMAR) CILMAR’s mission is to facilitate intercultural learning opportunities for all Boilermakers. The Center promotes and facilitates intercultural learning at Purdue and beyond. CILMAR fosters inclusion, belongingness and community; and cultivates knowledge, skills and attitudes of intercultural competence.

  20. 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE 1) Alchohol/Smoking 3) Animals/Pets  Drinking age is 21  See them as “part of the family”  Smoking just in “smoking areas”  Dogs, cats, hamsters, and fish 2) Driving Laws 4) Dress and Modesty Standards  Both Driver & passengers must wear seat belt  Dress casually during the daytime at school  Limit how often you honk your horn  In a formal setting, men should wear a suit  Allow pedestrians to have the right of way  Give a little wave if someone lets you merge

  21. 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE 5) Out in Public  Hold the door open for people walking behind you  Wait in line patiently 7) Social Courtesy  Treat people in service positions as equals.  Smiles are signals of politeness and friendliness  Give tips in restaurants, hotels, hair salons, etc  Avoid making eye contact with strangers  “Small talk” is acceptable & considered “nice” 6) Gestures  Personal space (2 feet apart when talking)  “thumbs up” mean “That’s cool!”, or “Good job!”  Pointing at people is seen as rude

  22. 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE 8) The Value of time  Time Is Money  Arriving 10 minutes late without notifying is 10) Usage of First Name, Last not socially acceptable Name, and Title  Address people by title and last name 9) Personal Hygiene  Using “Sir” and “Madam” are not common  Shower every day and wear deodorant.  Using too much perfume is not desired either  Brush teeth after eating smelly foods
