  1. Integrated management of New Caledonia marine waters - Coral Sea m arine protected area Project Peduncled crinoïd ( Gymnocrinus richeri ) and shrimp ( Laurentaeglyphea neocaledonica ) belonging to zoologic groups supposed to be extinct since Cretacea (>100 M year – secondary era)

  2. Biogeographic background of the project • 1.4 km² study area • Vast and near pristine coral reefs ecosystems hosting high biodiversity • High heritage value of deep benthic ecosystems – cold coral reefs and prehistoric faunas (« Jurassic park ») • Wide pelagic ecosystems sustainably exploited by longline domestic fishery 2

  9. Political objectives • Participate to national and international efforts in order to creating a marine protected areas network supporting ecosystem based management (Rio, 1992 – CBD) • Contribute to the sustainable management of the Coral Sea, through share effort with Australia • Setting in place gouvernance and marine spatial planning as a source of richness and sustainable development for New Caledonia. 10

  10. Surveillance at stakes • Challenging surveillance within a huge area: an important part of the EEZ is farther than 150NM away from first port or airport (> 400 NM in the western part) • Fisheries control policy at sea enforced by national Navy through dedicated boats and planes 11 ----------
