The Basic Series Impacts Over 70,000 believers

Introduction

ServeNow was launched in December 2012, but did not enter into any major projects until April

• 2013. The first test projects were held in India and Ukraine, and in both locations a booklet called The

Basic Things You Need to Know About Jesus was tested in Telugu and Russian. Approximately 1,000 copies were printed in each language. It became obvious that this way of presenting biblical truth in “small doses” was the answer to helping not only rural congregations, but also rural pastors. It was the kind of material they badly needed but at the same time could never have imagined to have available for themselves and their churches. Three years later over 200,000 copies are in print in four major countries, and more are being added this year. Every new believer is receiving one new booklet every three months, for up to seven years, creating an enormous basic knowledge about the Christian faith.

The Material

The Basic Series is made up of 30 booklets, 32 pages in each booklet, dealing with basic biblical concepts, written in an easy to understand form for people who have had no theological training or even read any Christian books. Right now the following 14 books are completed and will be used as of this year: The Basic Things You Need to Know About Jesus The Basic Things You Need to Know About Reading and Studying the Bible The Basic Things You Need to Know About Prayer The Basic Things You Need to Know About Salvation The Basic Things You Need to Know About the Bible The Basic Things You Need to Know About God The Basic Things You Need to Know About The Holy Spirit The Basic Things You Need to Know About the Church The Basic Things You Need to Know About Being a Christian The Basic Things You Need to Know About Sharing Your Faith The Basic Things You Need to Know About Living a Godly Life The Basic Things You Need to Know About Worship The Basic Things You Need to Know About Obedience The Basic Things You Need to Know About Serving The booklets are currently used in English, Spanish, Punjabi, Hindi, Nepali (for Nepal), Nepali (for India), Odhya, Bengali, Telugu, Ukrainian, Russian, Luganda, and Arabic, a total of 13 languages.

India

Pastor Raju is highly impressed with the booklets. He has sixty members in his church and is very excited to nurture his congregation with these

• materials. Smiling, he commented, I am very glad

to have such a simple method of understanding who Jesus is and the systematic way to read the Bible. These are also powerful tools for sharing the Good News to

• newcomers. Thank you for providing such useful books

for our spiritual growth and for teaching people in a proper way. I pray that the ministry of ServeNow will reach this nation for his glory. One of the young men who stood up to give his testimony shared how his mother’s prayers saved him. Prithivi was in his final year of Engineering and “full of himself,” wanting to be cool. He became addicted to alcohol and entered a path to self-destruction. He also became addicted to

• pornography. He had to face reality when he failed all his

classes, and therefore planned to commit suicide. However, as a result of his mother’s prayers, he returned to the Lord. He not only passed his exams but also found a good position. Today he is a strong follower of the Lord. He has a desire to know more about his faith and ServeNow’s national director (with him in the picture) mentioned that the Basic Series booklets have helped him to mature and grow. One reader recently commented, These books are like a walking stick for us. Without these booklets my understanding of basic Christianity and the ability to walk with Christ would be incomplete.

Pastor David, who comes from the tiny village of Garidhura in the foothills of the Himalayas, was born a Hindu. After a miraculous healing, he became a Christian. He completed his studies at a Bible school in Darjeeling, and started a church in his own village, as well as launched four other church plants in the surrounding villages. Pastor David states, I witnessed a great change in the lives of the believers in the church after they were introduced to ServeNow's Basic Series booklets. The believers have been sharing about the impact the books have had on them. These booklets are a wonderful tool to help the church as well as the leaders grow strong in their Christian faith. Another reader commented, These books help me to understand Bible truths in a clear way and has encouraged me to meditate on the Bible

• regularly. Now I am helping my family to read the Bible systematically.

Kavita and her husband have five daughters, but they were also longing to have a son. Pastor Pramod, who is from a church in Hyderabad, prayed for them and God gave them a son. As a result of this miracle the entire family gave their hearts to Jesus and are now his followers. In fact the believers meet for worship in their house. During the last scripture distribution program with the Basic Series booklet, Kavita told the ServeNow staff, Although we have experienced Jesus in our lives through a miracle, it was the book that you have given us to read that gave us real understanding about our Savior and Lord. Thank you so much for this precious

• book. We cherish it and read it again and again.

Pastor Samuel, from a church in Hyderabad recently commented, In spite of eight years of training and thirty years of ministry experience, I have learned things I did not know by reading this booklet. The believers in my church have also shared how helpful the first book has been for them to understand the Christian faith better.

Pastor Vineet, from Shimla, was born into an orthodox Hindu family. He came to the Lord at a Christian conference, which he attended as a

• teenager. He is not very educated but supports his pastoral ministry

through his newspaper distribution business which he started some years ago. Vineet works among the Kashyap, Meghta and Darzi tribes of Himachal Pradesh. Pastor Vineet and the congregation were very excited to receive the Basic Series booklets. After reading the first book, the believers in my church understood clearly the basics about Jesus and the Christian faith. We are excited to receive the second book in the series and we hope that we will receive more insight and grow mature in our Christian faith. Pastor David Dass pastors a church of 50 in Chandigarh. Born into a Hindu family, he accepted the Lord while attending a home meeting with his friend. Here are his comments: My congregation has been encouraged by the booklets. Most of them have already read the first book at least ten times. Now we are excited to receive the next booklet in the series. These books are a blessing to the church and the believers. Amiya, a believer from a small church fellowship in central India: The booklet on ‘How to read and study the Bible’ has helped me so much. It has increased my eagerness and hunger to study God’s word in a disciplined way which I never did before. Pastor Kiran is from Sukna, located in the foothills of Darjeeling. Born to a family of tea garden laborers, Kiran was not able to complete his schooling or receive formal theological education. When he felt the call in his life for ministry, Kiran started a small church which has now grown to 70 members. Recently Kiran made this statement, The Basic Series booklets are a great blessing to the church and to me personally. These booklets have made my believers grow stronger in the Word of God. Through these books, three new families have come to the Lord in the last year.

Pastor Marandi leads a church in Hyderabad, where his lively congregation is mostly composed of factory-workers, who migrated from the Hindi-speaking belt of India. They are so hungry for the Word of God. Approximately one hundred new believers meet every Sunday, and almost every one expressed his or her appreciation for The Basic Series booklets. My name is Samuel Soni, working as a pastor in Amritsar,

• Punjab. I also run a small Bible school where I prepare 20

evangelists for this region every year. They go to the most rural areas of North India for ministry. My church has been helped by ServeNow with the Basic Series materials and medical camps. The booklets that the church members have received have helped them grow stronger in their Christian faith and mature in Christ. Even the pastors and leaders are learning new things from the books. The medical ministry of ServeNow has also been a

• blessing. Conducting medical clinics in remote villages,

where no one else visits, and where people walk for miles in the scorching heat just to reach a basic healthcare unit is so wonderful. After one of ServeNow’s medical clinics in one of my church plants, 13 people started coming to the church and accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior, and in turn began to study the Basic Series. One of ServeNow’s India staff members comments, I shared God’s word with young people at a camp, hosted by Kesargadia Evangelical Church in the state of Odisha. Last Sunday the church held a worship service for the youth as well as the local believers. After we had handed out New Testaments and the Basic Series booklets, the pastor, Nehemiah Tudu said, The scripture program of ServeNow is such a unique idea. This program should be introduced in all the thirty of our Evangelical Churches. Our people need such scriptural teachings for spiritual growth. Jyoti Rai is a member of one of the churches ServeNow has partnered with in the Scripture program in the Himalayan range. She shares, After reading the Jesus booklet, I came to know that Jesus Christ did start his human life from a lowly beginning as a carpenter. He lived a normal and a lowly life. Not a luxurious one like that of a worldly King. Now I feel I know the Lord I worship very well. She now knows more about Jesus than she ever did. A man called Mr. Subba, told us, I always wished there could be a simple guide to understanding the Bible and Christianity better. Today my wish has come true.

Pastor Shyam from the Himalayas foot hills, was very excited to have ServeNow come back with the second basic series

• booklet. He exclaimed, The first book really helped me and the

church to know Jesus better. The second book on Reading and studying the Bible will really help us as I have been emphasizing the importance of Bible study, in order for the church to become a strong

• church. What's in these books are the basic things every Christian

has overlooked or taken for granted. We are glad that ServeNow has a vision of helping everyone know the basic things about our Christian faith. Here is a testimony of a young man who recently committed himself to the Lord and is regularly receiving and studying the Basic Series booklets through his pastor. My name is Bablu. I am 19 years old and I attend the church led by Pastor Syed Alam. Through his precious guidance and great counselling I have come closer toward the kingdom of the Almighty God. I received the Basic Things You Need to Know about Jesus booklet in Hindi which greatly increased my knowledge. I came to know many marvelous things which have transformed my life entirely. The second booklet has enhanced my knowledge and greatly enlightened my soul. I feel refreshed and I really thank God for all this transformation in my life. I thank God for bringing me closer towards his heavenly Kingdom and I believe that he will greatly use me for his Glory in the years to come. In a Scripture follow-up program in the Angul district in the state of Odisha, a man named Bulu Naik commented, I am reading the books I have received from you. These books are like my teacher. As I read them I understand the Bible better. The second book, How to Read and Study the Bible, has increased my desire to read the Bible regularly. Also, thank you for the third book on Prayer.

• Rev. Philip Malakar, one of ServeNow’s India board members, shared

about his experience with a 19-year-old young man named Arjun, while attending a small house church in New Delhi. Philip found Arjun deeply engaged in reading the Basic Things You Need to Know About Salvation in his own language (Hindi). When Philip asked what he liked about this book, Arjun replied: This book makes it so easy to understand the salvation of Christ. I had never understood it so well before!

• Rev. Philip also reported that two young people received the Lord and

were baptized. However, we cannot show their pictures for security reasons.

• Rev. Patrick, chairman of the board of ServeNow in

India, has a great passion for ministering to youth in the church. Recently, he started using the Basic Series booklets during Bible studies and devotions among the youth in his church in Hyderabad. Rev. Patrick tells us that these scripture materials help the young people grow in the Lord.

• Rev. Ashis and Sanita, from North Bengal, use the Basic Series booklets to help believers know and

understand the basic things about faith.

• Rev. Bijoy Singh lives in a remote village in

Kalimpong, without paved roads. The nearest road is a mile away, and this road isn’t even well-connected to other nearby towns. He has been pastoring a church in Kalimpong for the past 10 years. During the early years, he faced a lot of opposition from the local villagers, but his vision for the people and his dedication were never shaken. Now, he has baptized more than 30 people and more than 250 people from the village attend his church every Sunday. Bijoy lives with his wife Urmila and their 11-year-old daughter. He supports his ministry by working as a translator for Christian materials and he is a well experienced interpreter. Recently, ServeNow conducted a scripture program in Pastor Bijoy’s church. He was very excited with the idea of his believers growing strong in their faith through the Basic Series

• booklets. He said: These books are not only a wonderful tool for the

250 believers, but also for me personally. I am sure I will learn many things I don’t know yet. Sudheer is a private tutor from Hayath Nagar, in the outskirts of

• Hyderabad. He has a heart for the street children and for

impoverished people. In fact, he is taking care of an old lady and her 11-year-old grandson in his own home, even though they are not related to him. Sudheer could not stand by while seeing them suffer. He began by providing them with meals and telling them about the love of God. Sudheer attends Pastor Sampath’s church, where ServeNow recently led a scripture program. He enjoyed being a part of this program, and said in his own words, These books will not only be a wonderful tool for me to know more about Christ, but I can also use this material for Bible studies with the children I tutor.

Nepal

Recently the Basic Series booklets were distributed in the northern part of Chitwan, Nepal. The people were so excited to receive copies of these booklets. One of the pastors said, This Basic Series has helped my spiritual maturity. I don’t have Bible or leadership training, but these books really help me to teach my congregation in a better way. Thank you so much for providing such wonderful books. I am looking forward to the other books from ServeNow.” Pastor James, in Northern Nepal, told ServeNow, The Basic series are the best tools for evangelism and follow-up for newcomers to the faith. I have shared these tools with four other churches and they all appreciated them greatly. People are being added to the Kingdom of God and being

• baptized. These tools are so useful for their

strong foundation and spiritual maturity.

Despite the political challenges in the country, God is guiding ServeNow Nepal to reach out to the vulnerable communities with eternal hope in the Lord! A volunteer, Pastor Ishwor, is actively in- volved in providing the Basic series to the eastern part of Chitwan, where Pastor Shiva Lal told him, These books are very useful for me and my congregation to go into a deeper faith with our Lord Jesus Christ. We are using the Basic Series in our Home Church and we are seeing the transformation in the lives of the

• people. Thank you for providing this easy to understand version to have a deeper relationship with our Lord

Jesus Christ. Here are few comments from different pastors and leaders on the Basic Series: I found the series full of spiritual diets to grow into spiritual maturity which really helps me to nurture our members of the Church – Pastor Ram Bd. Praja The Basic Series, which everyone should read at least once, gives all the information about Jesus and his life! Thank you for providing this booklet to us. – Elder Gutilal Chepang This Basic Series is the best set of tools to nurture the newcomers into Christian maturity; even someone who has just become literate can easily understand Jesus through these booklets. I am hoping to distribute this series in every corner of Chitwan. – Pastor Ishwor Kumar Shrestha A local pastor, Siphal Praja, shared about the Basic Series, This is such a clear, easy-to-understand and important book. Everyone should read this book to have a strong foundation. Thank you for providing such an important book.

Regarding a recent distribution of the Basic Series booklets, Pastor Ishwor Shrestha said to us, Thank you for providing the Basic Series for our church. It is a real blessing for the growth of the spiritual maturity of

• ur congregation…People who received this booklet are sharing their faith with others. Also thank you for

providing such a tool as the ‘Story of Jesus’ for our children. We are seeing children also sharing their faith to their friends from this book. We received exciting responses from people when we distributed the Basic Series booklets and illustrated Story of Jesus for children. One of the pastors said, This is a timely help to heal the inner hurt of the people as many of them are traumatized. People need hope in their lives…these booklets bring hope to lost souls. This is great material to lead people into Christian maturity. The children are so excited to have The Story of Jesus as well. Thank you for providing such a blessing to the people. One Nepali pastor told us, This booklet is very useful for my congregation, not only newcomers but also for every believer. It really helps them to deepen their Christian walk. People can pretend to be a Christian but I think anyone who reads this book will never be the same! Thank you for providing such a blessed tool for my people and myself.

Uganda

Each time one of ServeNow’s coordinators visits a church, they take along copies of the Jesus booklet. Last week, we gave out 20 copies of the booklet to members of the Nakasozi Gospel Messengers

• Church. Everyone who received the book was so grateful because it now meant that they won’t have

to share the books anymore. One pastor, Nsenjuva Damiano, stated it like this, Before I read this book about Jesus, I thought he was an extraordinary man. Yet, while reading the book, I learned that he was also a man like us, with human emotions such as joy and sadness, feeling hungry, being in pain etc. He lived like we live, yet this did not hinder him from doing great things. I am therefore encouraged to follow him by praying and preaching the Gospel, just as he did. The books are truly an eye-opener in spiritual matters. Recently, Lindon Kavuma, the Uganda coordinator of the Basic Series, visited four churches in the Kankanda zone. These churches are active in studying the books together, led by their respective

• pastors. Pastors have witnessed the transformation of their members through the Basic booklet

series. At Kankanda Gospel Messengers Church, Pastor Ponsiano Matovu said, Through the book about prayer, members have developed a desire to make personal altars to seek God. Some made personal commitments to come to church to seek God, while others seek him from their homes. This attitude had never existed before reading these books. In addition, many members now come willingly to church prayer meetings. The books have also caused a desire among members to read the Word of God. One member said, I was able to read twelve chapters of the Bible in one

• day. This member had never done this before but through these

booklets, he was compelled by the Spirit to read the Bible. This has led to supernatural growth of the church, with different ministers ministering more than ever before. In Kirangira Gospel Messengers Church, Pastor Justus Turyabahika said, Members have a desire for the Word of God. They now attend weekly services in addition to Sunday services, to get ignited. Since only three members have Bibles in this church, the rest consider these books as key study materials because they contain corresponding scripture, which are read to them during the study. Even the few who have Bibles were initially lazy at reading them but are now very active.

There is an increased desire to study the Basic Series. This is a result of the transformation brought about by the first booklets that were read. In most churches, these books are studied jointly by all

• members. Pastor Francis Hafasha of Kampindu Gospel Messengers Church said, Members are

committed to studying the books. Turn out is always good. Members are always on time on the specific days dedicated to studying the books, eager to get new insights. In another church, Kawaala Gospel Messengers Church, Pastor John Friday commented, During our study through the book about Jesus, I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to do a further study through scripture

• n the topic of forgiveness. As I was teaching, God touched two biological sisters in church. These sisters had

family-related grudges. Though they were believers, they were bound. This particular day God delivered them from unforgiveness and with tears they reconciled. Several other church members were convicted to forgive their brethren. It was such a joy seeing members filled with love towards each other. These are extraordinarily Spirit-led and cause great impact in the spiritual lives of those who read

• them. Pastors and ministers now use these books in their teachings to believers and non-believers.

At Lubumba Gospel Messengers Church, through the book about salvation, many realized that they

• ught to serve God by fulfilling the Great Commission. The evangelism ministry is now very strong

because of what they all learned from this book. Members have also come to understand that they have received salvation by grace and they are so grateful to God.

In the Lumumba Church, they have read the The Basic Things You Need to Know about

• Salvation. Pastor Elijah Kawanguzi spent three months teaching members through this book.

Members were happy about the impact in their spiritual lives. As a way of knowing how they have benefited from these books, members shared with us what had touched their lives: I learned that I have to start serving God after being saved. After understanding this and acting upon it I have now discovered my spiritual gift. I was bought by the precious blood of Jesus which no one can take away from me. It is effective in its power to cleanse us and make us pure before God. At Nansagazi Gospel Messengers Church, the pastor commented, Members now use this book to preach the gospel since it has a message which non-believers need in order to be saved. Members also desire more to study the Word of God, and these books have caused that desire. Samuel Makona, a minister and assistant pastor of the church in Kijwiga, I have read the Basic Series booklets about prayer, salvation, Jesus and the Bible over and over again. Each time I read a particular book, it becomes fresh to me so that I don’t want to stop reading

• it. The text in the books is linked to scripture, which I in

turn open to get an even better understanding. These books have expanded my knowledge about the Word of God, hence, I have been able to teach in church frequently. Because of these books, my desire to read the Word of God has increased. Samuel Buyongwe, a member of Ntiba church, who has been saved for

• ver 30 years, told us, I was not taught

the basic truths of the faith and did not have a clear understanding of what salvation was really about. However, from the revelation acquired in the book about salvation, I am now a transformed man, eager to venture into the gift of

• salvation. The book has been a turning

point in my spiritual life. I am now a true born again believer.

Responding to the Basic Things You Need to Know about Prayer booklet, one member of Kyoga Gospel Church, named Nabagesera Annette, testifies: There are certain habits that we cannot easily let go of unless God intervenes. I have been saved as well as a minister for over five years. However, I was struggling with unforgiveness. Everyone around me knew that it was hard for me to forgive. I was holding so many grudges on people who had wronged me and could not let go of them. As I read the booklet about prayer, it hit on me so hard that God will not forgive me or hear my prayers if I do not forgive. It was not easy letting go of my unforgiveness but I cried to God to help me learn to forgive. Because of God’s grace, I was delivered. I forgave all the people I was holding a grudge against in my heart. God gave me the boldness to approach them physically and we reconciled. All this would not have been possible if it had not been for this booklet. I bless God for such great inspiration in the booklets. They are a great blessing to so many. In Netulidde Church, Busiku Julius testified about the transformation in his life as a result of reading the booklet about prayer. This is what he had to say: I attended the pastors and leaders training in December last year in Kampala, where Dr. Lars Dunberg was one of the speakers. At that time I was confused and troubled with a lot of challenges. I had the opportunity to receive the Basic Series booklets. As I read the book about prayer, I realized that there are answers to so many of the questions I had in my heart. The book reveals how to overcome challenges through continued prayer. I immediately embarked on the several prayer techniques as stipulated in the book, for example, the prayer of faith, repentance and prayer of unity with family members. This has caused a total transformation in my spiritual life as well as relief from life’s challenges. 68-year-old Elijah Nsubuga, tells a remarkable story: I accepted Christ as my personal Savior two months ago after reading the Basic Things You Need to Know about Prayer booklet. I was addicted to alcohol, so much so that I had abandoned my family and instead would spend most of my time in the bar. Previously many believers had witnessed to me about Christ but I had not been convicted about sin, judgement and repentance until I read this

• book. I was totally transformed in my spiritual life, physical body and family life.

Since March 2014, the Basic Series Uganda coordinator, Lindon Kavuma, has visited over 100 churches with ServeNow’s biblical

• resources. To him the literature in

these books is so inspirational, edifying, transformational and soul

• enriching. One member commented,

I wish every Christian could read these books because they portray the truth in God’s Word. Josham Sserwanje, director of Nambirizi Primary School, has shared the books with the children at his school and two

• thers, Ndeeba Primary School

and Bunjako Primary School. These school communities come together weekly to study the books. Surprisingly, Ndeeba Primary School is a Muslim-founded school, however, with a Christian principal, who warmly welcomed the books. He commented that the books have brought a transformation in the children’s lives, who share what they have received with their Muslim friends. The books have not only transformed the children’s spiritual lives but brought an improvement in their morals. He appreciates ServeNow for sharing the love of God through these books.

Lindon Kavuma, the Coordinator for distribution of The Basic Things You Need to Know series in Uganda, tells his story: My name is Lindon Kavuma. I thank God for Dr. Lars whom God gave a vision to spread his Word to everyone through the Basic Things You Need to Know series. The message in these books has touched many lives and many have been transformed. As many people testify, I also have a testimony to share. As a coordinator, my life has been impacted both spiritually and physically. My devotion towards reading the Word of God has been catalyzed. I do this in

• rder to have answers to questions asked by members in

different churches during discussions of these books, so I take time studying the Word of God and in so doing, my spiritual life is edified. My prayer life has also been taken to another level. Since coordination involves traveling long distances, meeting different members of different cultures and sharing the Word of God, I take time communicating with God for his perfect plan, direction and will in this work. Through this, my life has not remained the same. My faith in God and in His Word has grown through this service. Whenever I visit a church, I get quality time with the pastor, get to know how God called him/her, the challenges faced in ministry, victories attained and how God has been faithful to him/her by fulfilling his

• Word. As these pastors speak into my life, I get encouraged and keep trusting God more. I have learned
• boldness. I have gained confidence to speak to large and small groups. Through this service, I have learned to

be flexible. I am now able to go everywhere for God’s work despite the geographical location of the area, means of transport and without knowing how I will survive. I have been trained through this service to bear any situation for God’s work. I have seen God’s favor upon my life; members have been hospitable to me, have welcomed and loved me with joy. I have witnessed that our God is really omnipresent. I have seen different people of different cultures and languages praising, worshiping and glorifying God in their native languages. This inspired me to love God more. Through this service, I have made several new friends.

Ukraine

We wish to share this feedback from Pastor Kharkov: We especially thank you for the Basic Series booklets. It is important for our church, because many members of the church are new believers who need spiritual food. The material in the books is presented in a very simple and accessible form. Most of our churches are poorly educated people who need everything as simple as possible. When we received these books, I had the perfect biblical teaching for our meetings for new believers. The class was held for eight weeks. I gave homework. After every chapter, I made a list of questions that they should answer by reading the Basic Series booklets. This material has helped me as a pastor in training members of my church. Here are some reviews from Pastor Kharkov’s class using the Basic Series: Lubov, a Roma woman: I thought I already knew enough about the Bible, but after reading the book and taking the Bible class, I realized that I did not know the Bible. There is so much more. Alexander, 32 years old: My idea of a prayer life changed after reading this book. I began to realize how important prayer is to the Christian life. Angela, a 44-year-old Roma woman, who was baptized last summer: After the lesson devoted to the Bible, my attitude toward the Bible has changed. Now I understand that the Bible is necessary not only to read but to study. Thanks for the lessons and books. Oleg is a youth pastor at his church in Chernovtsy. He told us the following about the Basic Series booklets, These brochures are a great tool and beneficial in the study of basic fundamental topics related to salvation, Jesus Christ, the Word of God, and

• prayer. They are good for new believers as well as people

who have known the Lord a long time. First, this material helps to quickly learn first steps in the Word of God, the beginning of walking with Christ.
