SLIDE 1
History of Lansing Slides 1847 – 1867
Collection ID 2006-12-001 Forest Parke Library & Archives, Capital Area District Libraries This set of 100 slides came from glass originals obtained by Harold Jacobson, Lansing Public School teacher, West Junior High Principal. He put them into slides together with some taken from photos from Leavenworth Studios. Helen Jacobson (wife) prepared them for presentation and gave them to Mary Jane Wilson. Notation states “On loan from Mary Jane Wilson” but Mary Jane Wilson said she had donated them to CADL in a conversation on December 2, 2006 with volunteer Doug Johnson. Notes on slides copied from handwritten pages accompanying slides except for editor’s comments in square brackets “[ ]”. Numbers tie to image files, not always to handwritten notes. Slide 010 was not included in handwritten notes; identified from Edmonds collection. 01 Wooden Frame Capitol 1848 – Washington Ave. between Allegan & Washtenaw 02 James Turner Sr. Home 1848 - First clapboard home – Land agent for Seymour – Plank road builder 03 Back of old capitol 1865 (Lincoln’s death [mourners seen lined up outside Capitol]) There was a State Office Building where [1878] Capitol now stands 04 Lansing becomes a city 1859 – Main Corners of Town 1860 – Book store – notions – SE corner 05 State Republican – Founded 1858 – Hosmer v Kerr – Kerr 2nd Mayor 1860 06 Kerr Home – E St. Joe St (now Davidson Construction) Great socialite & gourmet 07 Ionia & Washington – 1860’s Buck Furniture shop [Mead drawing] 08 First Episcopal Church – built 1859 – sold to David Buck 1872 [Mead drawing] 09 Michigan Ave Bridge 1853 – Wood lattice – Rivers a problem – 1st bridges Main and N.
