Engineering – Concept to Production
What is NeedleSmart? A REVOLUTIONARY AND UNIQUE MEDICAL SHARPS DISPOSAL SYSTEM DESIGNED TO STERILISE AND DESTROY THE NEEDLE
The current approach • Designated as hazardous clinical waste • Expensive to dispose of • Environmentally unfriendly • Openly dangerous for healthcare workers • Risk of serious injury • Loss of workdays due to injury • Compensation claims expensive and likely to continue rising as the rest of the world follows the US litigation culture
The statistics • A global problem but 80% of all Needle Stick injuries are preventable! • Local UK data – over 100,000 reported NSI in the UK • Potential NHS savings ( Cost comparison to current sharps disposal) • Data recording benefits • >70% reduction in sharps to sharps bins calculated £5.53M saving • Upto 28% reduction in Needle Stick injuries £84M • 30 % reduction on disposal costs £6.75M
The Product • Needles placed into the NeedleSmart device are simultaneously heated to circa. 1300 ̊C and clamped. • Clamping compresses the needle into a “ball-bearing”, rendering the needle a non-sharp • Rapid heating sterilises the “ball bearing” destroying harmful bacteria and viruses such as HIV, Ebola, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. • The only product(s) globally that takes a contaminated needle, recycles and reforms the needle to a safe, sterile, sealed syringe • The only product(s) globally that can take a ”sharp” and reclassify as a non sharp!
