Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Mission FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. FDA also regulates the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by minors. OMHHE Campaigns • OMHHE has created a variety of health communication campaigns for health disparities related health topics. • Most of our campaigns have centered around public service announcement (PSA) videos. • Podcasts, fact sheets, infographics, and social media messages have also been used to supplement the PSAs videos. 9

  10. OMHHE Campaigns • “#ILoveMyHeart” • Created for American Heart Month. • Social media campaign that encouraged the public to describe how they take care of their hearts. • The former Secretary of Health and Human Services participated. 10

  11. OMHHE Campaigns • The hashtag was used more than 300 times during the initial launch month. • Hashtag had a reach of more than 3 million and had 6 million impressions on Twitter. • Profile visits to the @FDAHealthEquity Twitter page increased 160% that month. 11

  12. OMHHE Campaigns • “Clinical Trial Champions” • Campaign featured 6 short videos with a sickle cell disease and clinical trials advocate. • Emphasized the importance of diversity in clinical research. • The videos have received more than 15K views on YouTube. 12

  13. OMHHE Campaigns • “Dietary Supplement Health Fraud” • Launched in support of FDA’s warning about illegally marketed products. • PSA videos created in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tagalog. 13

  14. OMHHE Campaigns • Created Consumer Update fact sheets in corresponding languages. • Promoted during National Consumer Protection Week, National Safety Month, and Health Literacy Month. • The videos have received approximately 12K views on YouTube. 14

OMHHE Campaigns • “Veterans in Clinical Trials” • Created two videos to raise awareness about the unique health issues faced by veterans. • Promoted during Military Appreciation Month, Clinical Trials Awareness Week, Veterans’ Day. • OMHHE’s most successful campaign to date with more than 125K views on YouTube. 15

Lessons Learned • Staying engaged with the public through multiple platforms is critical. • Utilizing health observances and holidays can be effective for creating and disseminating content. • Co-branding with other organizations can be useful in disseminating information. • Paid advertisements, such as Google AdWords, can be effective in disseminating content. 16
