What is House Bill 5?
⦿ HB5 was designed to instill more
flexibility in public education by enabling students to either pursue a traditional path into colleges and universities or move directly into the workforce to help fill what business leaders say is a critical skills shortage.
What does JISD require to graduate high school?
⦿
English: 4 credits
⦿
Math: 4 credits (Algebra II required)
⦿
Science: 4 credits (Chemistry or Physics required)
⦿
Social Studies: 4 credits
⦿
Language other than English: 2 credits
⦿
PE: 1 credit
⦿
Fine Arts: 1 credit
⦿
Speech: 0.5 credit
⦿
Technology: 1 credit
⦿
Electives: 4.5 credits

Total: 26 credits (4 of the 26 required credits must be in a coherent sequence and content-specific to the student’s endorsement area)
Good to know….
⦿ A student must graduate with a
Distinguished Level of Achievement and be in the top 10% of their class to be eligible for automatic admission to a Texas public college or university.
⦿ A student must be in the top 6% of their
class to be eligible for automatic admission to the University of Texas.
Performance Acknowledgements
⦿ A student may earn a performance
acknowledgement in one or more of the following categories:
- For outstanding performance:
○ In a dual credit course (at least 12 hours with a 3.0
- r higher)
○ In bilingualism and biliteracy ○ On an AP test (3 or higher) ○ On the PSAT (commended or higher), SAT (410 –
EBRW, & 520 - Math), or the ACT (28)
○ Earning a nationally or internationally recognized
business or industry certification.

What is an Endorsement?
⦿ Students will be able to earn one or more endorsements as part of their graduation
- requirements. Endorsements consist of a related
series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set. They provide students with in-depth knowledge of a subject area. Students earn an endorsement by completing the curriculum requirements for the endorsement, including 4th credit of math and science and 2 additional elective credits.

choosing a college major.

What is a Pathway?
⦿ A focused sequence of courses that
leads to an endorsement and/or certification.
⦿ Once your child chooses their
endorsement, they will then decide the specific pathway they want to pursue.
What is Career Cruising?
⦿
Career Cruising is an Internet-based career exploration and planning tool used by your son or daughter to explore career and college options and develop a career plan. Career Cruising can be accessed from school, from home, or wherever your son or daughter has access to the Internet.

Timeline: 8th Grade
- Monday, Oct 22nd –
Plan Your Path field trip permission slips distributed. Due back October 29th
- Wednesday, Nov. 7th (LMS), Thursday, Nov. 8th
(NMS) –
9th grade counselors will discuss endorsements, AP, dual credit, and distribute endorsement and four year plan
- sheets. Educate students on how extracurricular activities
impact scheduling and course choices.
DUE back Thursday, November 15th
- Wednesday, Nov. 14th –
8th grade Plan Your Path field trip to JHS/NGC.
Timeline: 8th Grade
- December 10th – LMS
Secondary counselors will be at middle schools in careers classes to assist students with 9th grade course selection and four year plans.
- December 12th – NMS
Secondary counselors will be at middle schools in careers classes to assist students with 9th grade course selection and four year plans.
- December 14th –
All 9th grade course selections finalized in Career Cruising.
9th grade course selections will be locked in Career Cruising
8th Grade Timeline Goals:
⦿ Increase interaction time between 8th graders and
9th grade counselors.
⦿ Increase knowledge of Endorsements and 4-year
plan for students.
⦿ Students enter 9th grade with a Four Year Plan.
