  2. CREDITS High school credit is earned by:  Completing a course with a grade of 70 or higher for the year. AND  Attending school at least 90% of the time. (As required by Texas Education Agency Section 25.092.)

  3. WHAT COURSES ARE REQUIRED? Course Credits English 4 Math 4 Science 4 Social Studies 4 PE 1 Health ½ Speech ½ Foreign Language 2 Fine Arts 1 Electives (including endorsement courses) 5 Total Required for Graduation 26

  4. ADDITIONAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  In addition to state required core courses and electives, EVERY student MUST select an endorsement (area of interest).  Students may choose more than one endorsement  Students MUST also PASS FIVE end of course exams (STAAR) in the following areas: English 1, Algebra 1, Biology, English 2 US History

  5. GRADE CLASSIFICATION 0 – 5.5 credits Freshman 6 – 11.5 credits Sophomore 12 – 17.5 credits Junior Senior 18 + credits

  6. CREDITS What if I took some high school level classes in middle school, will those count when I get to high school? Yes. Middle school students who have taken high school level classes in middle school and have earned credit for those classes, can apply those credits to the total number of credits needed to graduate.

  7. COLLEGE CREDIT IN HIGH SCHOOL Can I earn college credit in high school? Yes. There are two types of courses that allow you to earn college credit while still in high school. 1.) Advanced Placement (AP) (depends on score and if the university accepts the credit) 2.) Dual Enrollment You will get more information about these options as you move through high school.

HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT This is a legal record which contains:  All of your grades and credit earned in high school (including high school courses taken in middle school)  Testing results  Cumulative grade point average (the average of all grades in high school courses)  Class rank  Graduation plan The transcript will follow you throughout high school and will be used by colleges in considering you for admission. Many places of employment and the military also request your transcript when making hiring and acceptance decisions.

  9. HOW TO READ THE TRANSCRIPT Credits you have Graduation Plan received If you have a * on a semester grade, you were APV and did not receive credit, regardless of your grade. Courses you have completed Foundation with Endorsement

  10. COMMUNITY SERVICE Do I have to do community service or volunteer in order to graduate? No, you don’t, but volunteering does make a difference in your high school career. Each year high schools recognize students at each grade level who volunteer AND all graduates who have earned 100 hours of community service are recognized during graduation. Added bonus: Colleges and scholarship committees look closely at students who are active and involved in their community.

  11. CORE CLASSES  The district offers all core classes at regular, GT, Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit levels.  Challenge yourself by taking advanced courses  Students must earn 4 credits of:  English  Math  Science  Social Studies

  12. ENDORSEMENT AREAS AND PROGRAMS OF STUDY

ENDORSEMENTS  Students are required to choose an endorsement as part of their graduation requirement.  Endorsement - area of interest in which students earn valuable experience to help prepare them for life after high school.  To earn an endorsement, students must complete 4 credits worth of courses in a sequence. One course MUST include an advanced level course.

  14. College Preparation Students  Take challenging classes in core academic subjects.  Get involved in school or community based activities that interest you.  Start a resume that includes your awards, honors, community service, extra curricular activities, and paid work experience.

  15. College Preparation Parents  Start talking about college plans.  Start researching colleges.  Encourage your student to remain in challenging courses.  PSAT  ACT  SAT
