SLIDE 2

COMPANY PROFILE

  • GRATIS Foundation evolved out of the

Ghana Regional Appropriate Technology Industrial Service (GRATIS) Project, established by the Government of Ghana (GOG) in 1987 with support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the European Union (EU) to promote small-scale industrialization in Ghana.

slide-3

COMPANY PROFILE

  • GRATIS Operate through
  • ur Head office, 8 Regional

Centres and 21 District Centres (3 Rural Technology Service Centres and 18 Rural Technology Facilities.

slide-4
SLIDE 4

GRATIS MANDATE

To promote industrialization and the dissemination of appropriate technologies in all the regions of the country by developing and demonstrating marketable products and processes which will enable micro, small and medium enterprise to increase productivity, employment and the resultant multiplier effect on the economy.

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Mission

  • To research, design, develop,

manufacture and market appropriate technology-based products and services for micro, small and medium enterprises so as to facilitate socio-economic and industrial development in Ghana and other African countries.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Vision

  • To be a centre of

excellence for research and innovation for appropriate technology products and services in Africa.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

STATEMENT

  • A powerful force drives the world

toward a converging commonality, and that force is technology.

  • The Poverty Gap between the developed

and underdeveloped nations is Technology gap as opined by Hon. Mahama Ayariga – Minister of Environment Science and Innovation.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Technological Changes

  • 1. Manual activities are giving way to use of

machines.

  • 2. Use of mechanized farm implements

instead of Hoe and Cutlass.

  • 3. Computers and Emails instead of

Typewriters and postal letters.

  • 4. Mobile Phone being used as Camera,

Radio, modem, receiving and sending emails, recorder, video player, etc, etc.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

  • 1. Depreciation of the Cedi,
  • 2. High Interest rate.
  • 3. Low incomes.
  • 4. High Input Costs
  • 5. Higher Imports than Exports.
  • 6. Unemployment.
slide-10
SLIDE 10

EFFECT OF OUR INABILITY TO MOVE WITH TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES

GHANA’S (AFRICA) in-ability to produce our

  • wn equipment to:
  • 1. Mine our Gold.
  • 2. Explore our Oil and Gas reserves.
  • 3. Process our raw Cocoa into

Semi/Finished products.

  • 4. Manufacture and assemble our vehicles.
  • 5. Process perishable crops such as
  • ranges, tomatoes, vegetables, etc.
slide-11
SLIDE 11

RESULTS OF OUR INABILITY TO MOVE WITH TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES

  • 1. Ghana earns less that 10% of Gold

revenue.

  • 2. Earns Less than 15% of oil revenue.
  • 3. Losses USD1.7B to post harvest losses.
  • 4. Importation of almost everything.
  • 5. Loss of revenue as a result of exportation
  • f Raw materials (33% loss on cocoa –

1million tons x $3,050 x 0.33 = $1B ).

  • 6. Unemployment, Depreciation of the Cedi,

etc.

HIGH QUALITY CASSAVA FLOUR (HQCF) PROCESSING

  • HQCF for production of Composite Flour

(Wheat and cassava Flour) A study has shown that replacing wheat flour with 20% non-wheat flour (composite flour) for the manufacture of bakery products would result in an estimated savings of US$2 billion annually to Ghana; 50% Composite Flour = US$5 billion.(Ghanaweb 18.07.2012)
