Differences between -1 & -2 streams?
It’s all about your future goals and academic future….
Students hoping to go onto academic universities, colleges, or
- ther post-secondary institutes
should aim to take the -1 streams in all 4 cores (Eng 30-1 is expected for all post-secondary universities). Students planning on going into the trades, attending vocational schools, or diving right into the workplace, taking the -2 streams (in most cases) will prepare you for this.
Changing pathways...is it possible?
If you’re in a -2 stream...can you get into a -1 stream?
For example, if you enroll in English 20-2 and achieve a high mark, you may then enroll in English 20-1 the next semester (or year) to then continue on in the -1 stream. Students do not typically go from a 20-2 stream to a 30-1 stream - except for extenuating circumstances & principal approval!
Summer School
Enrolling in summer school is a good option if you are choosing to:
- Upgrade from a -2 stream into the -1 stream.
- Recover courses
- To develop an understanding of Canadian Culture
This way, you can resume with the next grade level course in the upcoming year and not have to worry about being behind your classmates.
Summer school runs the month of July at CCHS, from Tuesday-Friday 8:30 am - 12:20 pm
In Grade 11 & 12, it’s important to strive for 70% or higher in the academic courses (Chemistry 20, Math 20-1, etc…) This will support your success in the following year as you will have a good understanding of the concepts that you will be building upon.
English
To graduate: English 30-1 or 30-2 All universities require English 30-1 (70%<) Vocational schools …..BVC
So you’ve completed Math 10C or Math 10-3... To graduate, you need up to Math 20 (-1,-2,-3) To get into universities, this may look different depending on your interest of study. For trades, other qualifications may be needed
MATH
Takin g Math 10C and proceeding to Math 20-1 ---> 30-1 is an academic route. You will need to prepare for homework, challenging concepts, and study time. If you are not planning on taking a higher level, math-related program (engineering, commerce, etc…), the -2 stream may be for you.
MATH
SCIENCES
To graduate: Science 20 - level course To go onto university or trade schools....you may need some of the Science 30- courses
- Ex. for NAIT
Sciences….
Science 10 is a prerequisite for Biology 20, Chemistry 20, and Physics 20. It is recommended that you have a 70% or higher in Science 10 to take the 20 level courses. Keep in mind that Science 10 ---> Biology 20 is an academic route! Chemistry 20 Physics 20
SOCIAL STUDIES
To graduate: Socials 30-1 or 30-2 For universities - you can have 30-1 OR 30-2
Feeling the stress to take the -1 pathway?
Keep in mind that the pathways will support you in different ways. If you are not strong in math and take Math 20-2, this may better support your learning and help you achieve a higher grade - therefore bettering your understanding and motivation in your future studies. For grade 12 courses, if the course is not a prerequisite for the program you want to go into, then it may be beneficial to take the pathway that will challenge you, yet still allow room for success. This will also increase your overall average, which is what many universities focus on.

Out of Province Courses
New for 2019/2020: A few BCHS students may consider out-of-province courses for over the summer. In order to ensure students successfully meet the requirements for a high school diploma in Alberta and to ensure that all courses taken are accepted by Alberta Education for transcript purposes, students who would like to take out-of-province courses must have the courses approved by BCHS administration prior to taking the courses. Any approved out-of-province courses successfully completed will be forwarded to Alberta Education with a “P” denoting a “Pass” and signifying that the school believes the learner outcomes for the out of province course were sufficient to meet the standards required to challenge the learning outcomes of the equivalent Alberta Education course. Please note, if a CRPS student takes an out-of-province course before communicating with their school, you may run the risk of taking a course which we feel does not align with Alberta Education curriculum and evaluation standards and one that BCHS will not forward to Alberta Education for transcript purposes. Credit in diploma examination courses for a student can be achieved only through a combination of:
- 1. Successfully challenge the school awarded portion of the course (are awarded a “P” by the school) and
- 2. Successfully completes the diploma examination for that course.
This is in line with a CRPS Board of Education’s directive.
