Global Wood Resources Phnom Penh, Cambodia November 2013 Introduction to the Speaker Speaker: Michael Hermens (53 years old) Nationality: Dutch (but left The Netherlands 31 years ago) Background: 1982 Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering specialized in public housing using timber • 1982 – 1987 Worked five years in the construction industry in Saudi Arabia • 1987 Arrived in Singapore and joined “IMS Group” as partner and MD of “IMS Kiln • Drying” 1996 IMS was sold and I started the timber business • 1998 Incorporated “Asia Panel Products” later renamed to “APP Timber” • Page 2 of 12

Global Wood Resources Phnom Penh, Cambodia November 2013 ASEAN – Current Status The supply of local tropical hardwoods is less due to restricted logging • The quality of local tropical hardwoods is getting less (younger and smaller trees) • Prices of local tropical hardwoods are increasing • The rubberwood supply and prices are heavily influenced by China’s demand • ASEAN is affected by the EU Timber Regulations implemented in March 2013 • Foreign buyers of ASEAN made timber products dictate the timber species • The result is an increased demand for imported sawn timber and veneers, especially • certified products (PEFC, FSC, SFI, AFS, etc) Page 4 of 12

Global Wood Resources Phnom Penh, Cambodia November 2013 Cambodia – Current Status Seems sufficient supply of local tropical hardwoods, no softwoods • An increased demand for timber products for local construction of housing, hotels, • offices, resorts, etc Local hardwoods can have a higher value for export products compared to using for local • products There will be pressure by International organisations to introduce Sustainable Forest • Management practise (for example comply with EUTR) Foreign investors might demand sustainable products even for domestic products • Enough people but insufficient production facilities and lack of technical know-how • Page 5 of 12
