A few words about Fortified Churches …
The fortified churches are a unique and interesting phenomenon. They are found in only a few locations throughout Europe, but Transylvania,
- nce home to more than 300 fortified
Saxon churches, constitutes the most significant collection.

- II. Innovative aspects
The Cultural Route of the Fortified Churches is along four counties in South Transylvania – Sibiu, Brasov, Mures and Alba. The communication between county management offices is missing and there is no common strategy regarding the regional development.
- Regional approach;
- Client oriented activities;
- Wide range of working fields;
- Usage of the cultural theme to link the local stakeholders
- Development of a regional identity.

- II. Innovative aspects
The project was innitiatied by Mioritics with the support of UNESCO Venice Office under the “Cultural Heritage - a bridge towards a shared future” program in South-East Europe (10 countries/partners participating). Mioritics is the only NGO involved in this program (all the
- thers are Ministries of Culture) and the project was presented several
times like best practice during the UNESCO Ministerial Conferences or UNESCO Experts Meetings. Even the project was innitiated and managed by an NGO, the activities became self sustainable after one year since the beginning and all the new funds (grants, sponsorships) are used for development of new activities.

Influence on development of cultural route
Since 2009 Mioritics Association is in permanent contact with European Institute of Cultural Routes in order to start the procedures for Council of Europe certification. Due to this collaboration:
- the first map of the route was presented, March 2010;
- the first Resource Center for Cultural Routes program was open in Sibiu,
May 2010;
- Mioritics and Ministry for Regional Development and Tourism set up the
Romanian priorities in terms of cultural routes development, February 2011;
- a stand of the Fortified Curches Routes was present during several travel
fairs in Bucharest, Luxembourg, Paris and Brasov. .

- III. Transferability to other projects
From the methodological point of view the activities are fully transferable to other territorial contexts and adaptable to any route. The application of this practice requires the adoption of appropriate modifications linked primarily to the type of the Route and to any other existing infrastructure.
