Viscosity is the measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow
Conditions that cause higher viscosity
- Paint is cold especially during winter months
- Container not sealed properly in storage
- Container left opened to allow solvent evaporation
- Using catalysed product that is past its pot life
Results of high viscosity paint
- Harder application
- Orange peel
- High film build
- Trapped air
- Trapped solvent causing solvent boil
15
- Hold viscosity cup by handle & completely submerge into paint
- Hold stop watch in other hand, ready to start
- Lift viscosity cup out of paint and start stop watch immediately
- As soon as paint flow from cup breaks, stop the stop watch.
- Check time on stop watch to Technical Data Sheet.
- If time is out more than 2 -3 seconds either side, add reducer
- Test again
