Viscosity is the measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow

Conditions that cause higher viscosity

  • Paint is cold especially during winter months
  • Container not sealed properly in storage
  • Container left opened to allow solvent evaporation
  • Using catalysed product that is past its pot life

Results of high viscosity paint

  • Harder application
  • Orange peel
  • High film build
  • Trapped air
  • Trapped solvent causing solvent boil
slide-16

15

  • Hold viscosity cup by handle & completely submerge into paint
  • Hold stop watch in other hand, ready to start
  • Lift viscosity cup out of paint and start stop watch immediately
  • As soon as paint flow from cup breaks, stop the stop watch.
  • Check time on stop watch to Technical Data Sheet.
  • If time is out more than 2 -3 seconds either side, add reducer
  • Test again
