FDLA STUDENTS ARE… • the most outstanding of FIRST’s secondary students • great examples of current student leaders who have led their teams and communities to increased awareness for FIRST and its mission • students who achieve personal technical expertise and accomplishment • those who will continue on as great leaders of FIRST’s ever-growing student alumni.

  4. THE THREE LEVELS OF FDLA STUDENTS • Semifinalists • 10 th or 11 th grade • Two nominees per team (only one event) • Finalists • Two students selected at each regional competition and district championship • Winners • Ten students selected at the two FRC Championships

  5. PROCEDURE SemifinaIists Finalists COLORADO FRC Ten winners REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2 per event selected (MARCH 2019) (APRIL 2019)

  6. FDLA SUBMISSION Criteria for selection of the FDLA shall include a student's: • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to the FIRST core values • Effectiveness at increasing awareness of FIRST in the school and community • Interest in and passion for a long-term commitment to FIRST • Overall individual contribution to their team; • Technical expertise and passion; • Entrepreneurship and creativity; and • Ability to motivate and lead fellow team members.

  7. FDLA SUBMISSION • A mentor, who is not related to either of the chosen students, will complete and submit the application for the FDLA at one qualifying event. • The team as a whole must verify the accuracy of the submission. FIRST is relying upon the team for the veracity and accuracy of the submission.

  8. THE NOMINATING ESSAY SHOULD… • Have no more than 4,000 characters • Be specific! • Inform judges on the specifics of the nominee’s entrepreneurial, technical, creativity, and innovation skills • Include specific examples • Be primarily focused on the nominee’s participation in FIRST • Be written clearly and concisely

  9. FDLA JUDGING • Dan and Matt are this year’s FDLA judges at the CO Regional Competition • The judges review all nominations prior to the CO Regional Competition • The judges conduct a 5-7 minute in-person interview with each nominee at the CO Regional Competition • a mentor may accompany the nominee for the interview, but MAY NOT speak • judges will provide no feedback to the nominee • The judges select the two finalists, and write additional comments to help in the selection of the winners at the FRC Championship
