During a 1 week stay in August, students will participate in seminars on environmental sustainability and resource management at Sir Sanford Fleming College and / or the Kawartha Conservation Authority offices, and undertake natural and/or social science studies on sustainability in at least one of the Kawartha Lakes (Pigeon, Sturgeon). Preparatory meetings will be held prior to departure, and seminar / poster presentations on research outcomes will be made during the Fall Term. ENV 331 Environmental Sustainability

Prerequisite: 3rd year standing in any of the ENV Specialist Programs, or specialists in ENV affiliated programs (e.g. GGR, ECO, BIO, CHE), plus application and interviews.

Admission: through application due March 15, 2012, electronically (.pdf format only please), to Prof. Shear (harvey.shear@utoronto.ca).

The application must include a current transcript (ROSI pdf printout will suffice), a current curriculum vitae, and a cover letter of application explaining why the student’s qualifications and interest make him /her a suitable candidate for the course.

Applicants who meet minimum criteria will be selected for an interview. Acceptance will be based

  • n a combination of GPA (2.7 or higher), experience, qualifications and interview performance.

In addition to a tuition fee, there is a travel cost (up to $650) associated with this course that accepted students will be responsible for. .

GGR389: Field Studies in Human Geography

Montreal 29th April – 4th May

Please join Professors Daniere and K. Wilson for a 6-day field course in Montréal to study urban and social geography in la belle province. The 24 students accepted into this course will meet twice prior to the trip as well as several times during the months of May and June. Students will research selected topics related to planning, urban, and social geography and produce presentations as well as short research papers. The field trip includes visits to sites of political, social and economic significance in Montréal and, of course, one dinner at a nice French

  • restaurant. Free time will be allocated for research and sightseeing.

Application Process: GGR389H5 Field Studies in Human Geography - Montreal

The total cost of the course is $600. Please submit a one-page letter of interest explaining your reasons for taking this course and a $100 non-refundable deposit to Sabrina Ferrari, Department of Geography by Friday, April 2nd, 2012. Preference will be given to Geography Majors and Specialists. The remaining $500 is due April 16, 2012. The $600 fee includes transportation (return-trip Toronto to Montréal) hotel (triple or quadruple room occupancy), four breakfasts and one dinner. Students are responsible for the rest of their meals during the trip. Acceptance into the class - students will be notified by April 9th, 2012. Informational meeting about the course will be held on April 18th 4:00-6:00pm.

ENV395Y: Ecology and Conservation in the Andes, Amazon, and Galápagos

Course Structure:

  • Field exploration of interdisciplinary

environmental issues in three very different ecological regions:

  • 2 nights – Andean highlands
  • 7 nights – tropical rainforest and cloud

forest expedition in the Amazon

  • 10 nights – Galápagos Islands

(snorkeling; 5 day trips to various islands)

  • 12 nights – Quito - city tour, home base

for trips to Mitad del Mundo (Equatorial divide) and Otavalo
