Who can help you choose?

  • Parents/Carers
  • Your tutor/PD teacher
  • Your subject teachers
  • Older students
  • Mrs Wood School Careers Co-ordinator

(Community Office by staffroom)

  • Your own research
slide-8
SLIDE 8

Beware of Peer pressure

  • Do not choose a subject because your friend is
  • Listen to your parents’/carers’ views but they

will not have to go to the lessons for the next 2 years

  • Choose subjects you think you will enjoy but

be realistic!!!

The “Ebacc” and GCSE reform

  • GCSEs are becoming “more rigorous” and

have greater content

  • So the class of 2020 is getting more time for

their option subjects…..

  • Over the last few years we have increased the

amount of English and Maths on the timetable

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Maths and English

  • Any student who does not achieve at least

grade 4 equivalent will be resitting or doing more Maths and English at college (no matter what course they do)

  • Please note most colleges ask for higher

grades than 4 to do some A levels

SLIDE 13

Your year 10 and 11 timetables

You have to take…

  • GCSE Maths(7 hours in yr 10, 8 in yr 11 per fortnight)
  • GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature

(4 hours each)

  • Science –combined (2 GCSEs 10 hours)
  • RS /Citizenship (5 hours)
  • Personal Development (1 hour)
  • Computing studies (1 hour yr 10 only)
  • 3 hours of core PE
slide-14
SLIDE 14

THE PATHWAYS

  • Ebacc- our more able students have to take a

language and 2 other options

  • Progress students have to take one from

History, Geography, A language, or Computer Science) and then 2 options

  • LETS students are highly encouraged to take

LETS to continue to support their Maths and English and 2 options.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

How was my Pathway chosen?

  • Although there are exceptions after I have

consulted with the SENCO and other staff the rule of thumb is:

  • Maths sets A and B = Ebacc pathway
  • Maths sets C and D = Progress Pathway
  • Anyone doing LETS for Maths English support

= LETS pathway

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Options = 5 lessons each per fortnight

  • Students x halves and y halves are mixed

going into yr 10 to facilitate: setting of Maths and Science, RS/Citizenship choices and

  • rganisation of English classes
  • Options A,B and C have students from both

halves mixed together depending on their choices

FAQ

  • Can my daughter do extra GCSEs?
  • 9 GCSEs is very demanding so this is not

something we would recommend or provide. Some able maths students can volunteer to do an extra curricular Statistics GCSE but we do not do this as part of maths lessons since the new GCSEs started.

  • They are significantly more demanding than

the old GCSEs. Hands up who did O levels?

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Do I have to do a language?

  • Yes if you are on the Ebacc pathway
  • We have made exceptions for students with

additional needs e.g. dyslexia

  • It has always been our philosophy that a well

balanced qualification outcome should include a pass in a language GCSE for those who a are able to.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

FAQ

  • Can I opt to do PE and Dance?
  • Yes but make sure that both PE and Dance

teachers agree with your preference and that you are prepared for the physical exertion!

slide-20
SLIDE 20

FAQ

  • Are there any subject combinations I can’t

chose?

  • you cannot do Art and Creative textiles (THEY

ARE BOTH Art GCSEs)

  • If you would like to do DT textiles and Creative

textiles please discuss with relevant teachers

slide-21
SLIDE 21

FAQ

  • Can anyone take Triple Science?
  • Triple Science is only suitable for students in 9 A

and B Maths/Science sets so is on the Ebacc pathway and please discuss it with your Science teachers for more info.

  • If you're in 9XC/9YC and interested, you HAVE to

speak to your Science teachers and if they give you the green light you have to see Mr Davies to change your pathway.

slide-22
SLIDE 22

So how many qualifications will I get?

  • Some get 9 = Maths, English x2, Science x2,

RS or Citizenship, a language or option A,

  • ption B and option C
  • Some do 8 GCSEs = if they chose LETS+ for

extra Maths & English

  • Occasionally students have their qualifications

modified – e.g. if they have had a long term illness during their yr 10 and 11

slide-23
SLIDE 23

When do I know if I have my

  • ptions?
  • By May half term (possibly earlier) your form

tutors will be given information about your

  • ptions.
  • Before then- between February and May, Mr

Davies may speak to you if there is a clash or if some subjects are over subscribed.

  • It is almost impossible to give everyone their

first choices.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Will I get all of my choices?

  • Courses can only run if enough people chose them
  • If fewer than 15 people want to do a certain course

then it is unlikely it will run

  • Also some courses are over subscribed so some of

you will get your reserve choice

  • It is rare that there are clashes where you cannot do

any of your 1st and 2nd choices

  • I will be asking to see many of you individually over

the next 6 weeks or so if there are issues

slide-25
SLIDE 25

What if the subject I would like to do is not on my options form?

  • This may be that this is a subject that past

experience suggests you would find it difficult to succeed in.

  • However we do try and personalise your

forms as much as possible.

  • If the above applies to you please email Mr

Davies and he will speak with you.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Non GCSEs

  • These are qualifications we do in Sport and

Travel and Tourism ( Btec firsts), Child Development (OCR National) ICT (CiDA)

  • These are all equivalent to GCSE, they have

progression to local colleges. They are vocational so have a higher proportion of non examined assessment.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

!Attendance and Attitude!

…………………...are the the biggest

factors in whether you do well at school.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Attitude to learning

NEW ATL 9-1

  • 9. Outstanding effort. Takes responsibility and works beyond what is

required in the lesson and completes extension work regularly. Challenges herself to work independently to further develop knowledge and skills.

  • 8. Excellent effort. Engages in all aspects of the lesson. Makes a positive

contribution to group learning. Works independently and homework is always of a high standard.

  • 7. Consistently good effort. Well behaved and focused on the task at hand.

Able to work independently. Homework is generally of a good standard and completed on time.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Attitude to learning

  • 6. Completes most work set in class but work is sometimes

lacking in detail. More effort is required. Homework is sometimes completed on time. Behaviour is almost always good.

  • 5. Work is affected by lack of effort and frequent off task
  • chatter. Homework and equipment is sometimes forgotten.
  • 4. Does very little in class and rarely completes homework.

Can be disruptive occasionally and is often moved within/from the lesson.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

Attitude to learning

  • 3. Does the minimum amount of work required and

can be disruptive. Demonstrates confrontational behaviour when challenged about lack of effort.

  • 2. Consistently poor levels of behaviour and attitude

to learning are significantly affecting progress.

  • 1. A poor level of attendance and/or punctuality is

significantly affecting progress.

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Wednesday 21st February

  • Your Option form must be handed in on this

date as I need to work out how I can maximise students getting their First choices

  • If you hand it in late you may be less likely to

get your first choices- options are not “first come first serve” but designed to maximise students’ preferences.

slide-32
SLIDE 32

First Choices

  • Please note that everything is done to try and

ensure you get your first choices but it is not always possible

  • If too many people have applied for a subject

then we may go to the subject leader and ask them which students they think have done well at their subjects in years 7,8 and 9.

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Remember……..

  • Most of the Subjects that will help you

progress are compulsory anyway!!

  • So don’t stress!!
  • Anyone who gets good grades in Maths,

English, Science and RS/Citizenship will be able to do just about anything!

  • Art is useful for the Hair and Beauty sector
