TABE 11/12 ‐ Basic Information

  • TABE stands for Test of Adult Basic Education.
  • TABE tests are given to clients to measure math, reading, and

language levels both as pre‐assessment tests and post assessment tests.

  • TABE 11/12 was approved for a seven year period by the US

Department of Education in the publication of the Federal Register /Vol. 82, No. 172 on September 7, 2017.

SLIDE 3

TABE 11/12 ‐ Locater Test

  • When a client is going to take the TABE assessment test, they are first

given a locater test (a pre‐test).

  • The locater determines which version of the TABE test a client should
  • take. This is needed because not all clients are going to come into the

WIOA program at the same academic preparedness, so the locater attempts to give an individual the assessment test tailored to their current academic status.

  • The different TABE 11&12 (math, reading, and language) tests are

broken down to the version of L = Literacy; E = Easy; M = Medium; D = Difficult; or A = Advanced.

SLIDE 4

TABE 11/12 ‐ Scoring

  • The

scoring

  • n

TABE 11&12 assessments test are based on a scale score and GLE (Grade Level Equivalency).

  • Those scores are used to

award an EFL (Education Functioning Level), which is broken down between levels of 1 – 6.

  • 1 = Beginning ABE Literacy
  • 2 = Beginning Basic Education
  • 3 = Low Intermediate Basic

Education

  • 4 = High Intermediate Basic

Education

  • 5 = Low Adult Secondary Education
  • 6 = High Adult Secondary

Education

slide-5
SLIDE 5

TABE 11/12 – Test Version Scores

  • Each version of the TABE 11/12 test has it’s own range of minimum and maximum

GLE (Grade Level Equivalency), which then relates to the EFL (Education Functioning Level).

  • Each type of test (Math, Reading, or Language) has it’s own minimum and

maximum scale score within the same minimum and maximum EFL range.

  • The following score tables were configured using the TABE 11&12 Grade Range

Scale Score Guidance for Printed Forms and pages 8‐18 of the TABE 11 & 12 A Guide to Scoring Tables & Requirements.

TABE 11/12 – Test Versions

  • The “L” version of the math, reading or language assessment test has a highest possible

GLE of 3.9.

  • The “E” version of the math, reading or language assessment test has a highest possible

GLE of 5.9.

  • The “M” version of the math, reading or language assessment test has a highest possible

TABE 11/12 – Test Version Scores Examples

  • This is the scoring for the TABE 11‐12, version L = Literacy for the Math, Reading and
  • Language. When someone takes the L version, the highest possible GLE is 3.9 and the

highest possible EFL is 2 ‐ Beginning Basic Education.

  • Someone taking a version L math test can score no higher than GLE of 3.9 and highest

possible EFL is code 2 ‐ Beginning Basic Education, and they can score no lower than GLE

  • f 0.0 and lowest possible EFL is code 1 ‐ Beginning ABE Literacy.
slide-8
SLIDE 8

TABE 11/12 – Test Version Scores Examples

  • Now, compare that to the L version for reading. Please observe that the

minimum and maximum scale scores are slightly different, while the minimum and maximum GLE score ranges are the same.

  • Someone taking a version L reading test can score no higher than GLE of

3.9 and highest possible EFL is code 2 ‐ Beginning Basic Education, and they can score no lower than GLE of 0.0 and lowest possible EFL is code 1 ‐ Beginning ABE Literacy.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

TABE 11/12 – Test Version Scores Examples

  • And compare that to the L version for language. Please observe that the minimum and

maximum scale scores are slightly different, while the minimum and maximum GLE score ranges are the same.

  • Someone taking a version L language test can score no higher than GLE of 3.9 and

highest possible EFL is code 2 ‐ Beginning Basic Education, and they can score no lower than GLE of 0.0 and lowest possible EFL is code 1 ‐ Beginning ABE Literacy.
