  • Born from the 2014 publication of a related Ohio 4-H

leadership project book

  • Allow teens to put the project into practice!
  • Funded by statewide Ohio 4-H Foundation grant
  • $150 as community service project start-up

* Excess funds enabled extra grant awarded.

The Fine-Print Details

  • Applicant must be 14-18 and returning 4-H member
  • Groups/clubs eligible, but single teen must be lead applicant & give

leadership to project planning/completion

  • County 4-H professional must sign-off on application
  • Repeat applicants must submit new project or expansion/variation on

previous project

  • Grant does coming with spending restrictions
  • Awarded in the spring with 6-months to complete
  • Required to submit impact form and ‘sharing’ project

  • Designed to challenge youth to be active citizens in

government and make their voices heard.

  • FORTY – FIFTY youth statewide are selected annually.
  • Learn how policy development works
  • Meet with Ohio Legislators and share policy ideas
  • Develop in teams their own idea for a policy to be implemented at the

county, state or federal level

  • Work with a past participant mentor as a guide throughout the process.
  • Present policy proposals to state and local leaders at the Ohio State Fair
  • Past proposals examples: Road Safety, GM Kn”O”w, STEAM, Farm to

Plate Education, Community Gardens, Water Shed Protection

What: Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge Who: Youth at least 14 and in ninth grade through 18 and seniors: 4-H, FFA, and Ohio Farm Bureau Youth members Why: Youth from across the state coming together to learn how to make their voices heard in government and make a difference. When/Where: Phase 1: OYCC Retreat - Downtown Columbus and the Capitol. Phase 2: Working independently in their teams during the year in their

  • communities. Developing the policy plan they identified.

Phase 3: Round 1 Competition – all teams present policy Phase 4: Round 2 Competition – top 3 teams present policy for scholarships
