  4. "the first step in sound classroom teaching and assessment practices associated with grades is to make them meaningful.” Guskey WHY the Change? • To more accurately and effectively communicate student progress to parents and students; • To be clear and specific about the academic and pro-social standards i.e., what all students need to know and be able to do in each domain; • To respond to each Massachusetts State Framework as indicated through the Common Core Curriculum Standards; • To honor the request of “stakeholders” who have expressed that the current reporting tool is outdated.

  5. What is a Standards-Based Report Card? • Assesses student performance against a specific and observable grade set of Skills • Measures each student against the identified grade level “ end of year ” standard • Does not measure how the student performs compared to other students.

  6. Math Standard Gr. 5: Applies understanding of multiplication and division when multiplying and dividing fractions. • Now what grade would this student receive? • Mastered, Progressing, Emerging or Not Demonstrated? C C MA (MISSING ASSIGNMENT) D C B A

  7. What Grade Would This Student Receive? C C MA (MISSING ASSIGNMENT) D C B A

  8. How will the standards ‐ based report card look? You will notice two categories: 1. Pro ‐ Social Skills and Approaches to Learning 2. Multiple, specific Academic Standards for each subject area

  9. How Were the Academic Standards “selected”? Essential standards representing what all students should know and be able to do were identified: • in each academic area • at each specific grade level • with attention to vertical & horizontal coherence • with attention to transfer so that children become college and career ready

  17. How will student performance be measured? ¡ There are two sets of performance indicators: 1. Numbers will be used for the pro ‐ social and learning approaches portion of the document 2. Letters will be used for the academic performance indicators

  18. Pro-Social Skills & Approaches to Learning These skills will be measured with letters by the following indicators: 4 – Student CONSISTENTLY demonstrates this skill 3 – Student demonstrates this skill MOST of the time 2 – Student demonstrates this skill SOME of the time 1 – Student requires on-going intervention to develop this skill

  19. ACADEMIC Performance Indicators The academic indicators are assigned letters: M – Indicates that the student consistently and independently demonstrates Mastery (approx. 5 times) of/Proficiency in the grade level standard or in the highest rubric categories by end of trimester. P – Indicates that the student is Progressing (approx. 4 times) appropriately toward consistent and independent mastery of/proficiency in the grade level standard.

  20. Academic Performance Indicators ¡ ¡ E – Indicates that the student is Emerging (3 times) to progress toward the grade level standard (sometimes student can demonstrate standard with help, but not consistently.) ND – Indicates that the standard is Not Demonstrated (may demonstrate standard once or twice) Child is not demonstrating progress toward the grade level standard. No consistency is seen in demonstrating the standard when given the task. / – Slashed out or grayed out: Standard Not Addressed at this time in this trimester.

  21. Frequently Asked Questions? • What will Elementary Standards-Based Report Card look like? Look at Your Copy! • Will the report card be a paper/pencil task? No, by Data Entry • What training/education has been put in place for teachers and parents/guardians? Ongoing teacher PD days through this year & next year. PLC’s and Grade Level meetings. Parent Outreach Meetings Website http://www.oldrochester.org/pages/ORR

  22. Implementation Plan ¡ Teacher ¡EducaMon ¡& ¡Training ¡ ¡ • Continuous education on the standards, both academic & pro- social • Application of the Performance Indicators • Technical training for entering information • Handbook for reference • On ‐ going feedback throughout the year and modifications made based on parent and teacher surveys. • Parent and teacher evaluation at end of year

  23. Implementation Plan Summary ¡ • Forums (day & evening) • Video for website • Handbook online • Post Trimester Evaluation and End of Year Feedback and Evaluation

Read electronic notices! • Talk with your child about his/her daily work & standards. • Give positive support at home. • Communicate regularly with the teacher celebrating the standards your student is successful with and support the standards on which your student is weak. • Summer Reading – Go to the Library! • Summer Math – See parent tips! • Visit the Curriculum Instruction webpage to see report cards, print them and gain more posted information.
