What We Learned in Spanish II & III We use the imperfect to: • say what was happening instead of the progressive tense. • communicate emotions, ideas, and beliefs in the past • Tell time and someone’s age in the past
What We Added This Year (New Information) 1. Some verbs have different meanings in the imperfect and preterite. 2. The imperfect is used to communicate actions happening at the same time in the past: Yo estudiaba cuando mi hermano practicaba su trompeta. 3. The preterite is used for a sequence of events in the past: Estudié, cené con mi familia, vi la tele, me duché, me cepillé los WW1 dientes y me acosté. 4. The preterite interrupts the imperfect: Yo estudiaba cuando mi hermano practicó (empezó a practicar) su trompeta. 5. When the preterite is used for emotions, something caused the emotion to change. Estuvimos emocionados cuando nuestro equipo ganó el trofeo.
