  2. 2 Context EGNOS2road project was run to provide a technical and economical evaluation of the use of EGNOS/ Galileo wrt GPS for two road extra ‐ urban and urban applications: – Road charging – Tracking & tracing of professional fleets EGNOS2road evaluation was elaborated on the basis of: – Technical analysis built on extensive trials in operational conditions, different road environments – Assessment of operational benefits in selected real business cases – Economical quantification through concrete business plans – Identification of the necessary elements for legal value/ regulated use

  3. 3 EGNOS/Galileo services added values EGNOS OS added value  enhanced accuracy in the position / capability to give a value for the position nearer to the true position (i.e. minor error in the position measurement) EGNOS CS/EDAS added value  capability to enable the implementation of solution, providing higher availability of the enhanced accuracy (thanks to the distribution of EGNOS data via alternative means wrt SiS) and qualification/ confidence in the position (thanks to the integrity processing) Galileo Authentication added value  capability to provide a more trustable source of the position (i.e. inhibition of meaconing and spoofing effects ‐ not jamming)

  4. 4 Business cases Extra ‐ urban business cases:  Road charging  Tracking & tracing of third ‐ party service fleets Urban business cases:  Tracking & tracing of touristic coaches  Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of access/ circulation in LTZ zones  Tracking & tracing of LTP fleets operated by a LTP Service Provider  Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of vehicles for goods delivery, according to the regulation Involvement of two road operators:  Extra ‐ urban/ Società Autostrada Tirrenica  Urban/ City of Rome

  5. 5 Trial campaign (1/3) Conducted along extra ‐ urban and urban road networks/ driving environments/ critical and interesting stretches Using EGNOS ‐ ready technology available on the market:  GPS/EGNOS off ‐ the ‐ shelf receivers and antennas  Commercial device for the automotive markets  Proven solution EGNOS CS/EDAS enabled

  6. 6 Trial campaign (2/3)  Different types of GPS/EGNOS receivers/ antennas  Different types of vehicles

  7. 7 Trial campaign (3/3)  Different critical points and interesting stretches Intersection Close/ parallel roads Ramp LTZ gate

  8. 8 EGNOS CS/EDAS processing EGNOS msg Positions and raw data Value ‐ Added Corrected positions and Service Provider Protection level Measurements of:  Horizontal accuracy of the position wrt to a reference trajectory (true path)  “Protection level” providing the qualification/ level of confidence in the position (thanks to the processing of EGNOS integrity)

  9. 9 EGNOS performances wrt GPS (1/2) EGNOS OS enhances position accuracy wrt GPS: Accuracy improvement wrt GPS ranges from 0,1 m to 3,7 m (on average, also in case of dense tall buildings/ foliage conditions/ urban roads) EGNOS CS/EDAS further enhances position accuracy wrt GPS and provides level of guarantee of position/ capability to qualify position data:  Horizontal accuracy improvement wrt GPS ranges from 0,1 m to 4 m (on average, also in case of dense tall buildings/ foliage conditions/ urban roads)  “Protection level”

  10. 10 EGNOS performances wrt GPS (2/2) EGNOS OS and EGNOS CS/EDAS key performance values (average) for horizontal accuracy and protection level GPS (m) EGNOS OS (m) EGNOS CS (m) EGNOS CS HPL (m) 2,0 1,4 1,1 9,1 EGNOS OS  higher accuracy wrt GPS GPS (m) EGNOS OS (m) Extra ‐ urban environments 1,4 1,0 GPS (m) EGNOS OS (m) Urban environments 7,4 3,4 EGNOS CS/EDAS  higher accuracy wrt GPS + qualification/ confidence on the position Extra ‐ urban environments EGNOS CS (m) EGNOS CS HPL (m) 0,9 8,8 EGNOS CS (m) EGNOS CS HPL (m) Urban environments 1,8 10,9 Number of positions for EGNOS CS/EDAS Availability processing 96,91%

  11. 11 EGNOS added value in extra ‐ urban roads True path ( Enhanced accuracy and “protection level” provided with EGNOS allow to:  Distinguish two close/ parallel roads of different networks, typically tolled and not ‐ tolled stretches (e.g. motorway very close and parallel to secondary lane, motorway and secondary lane crossing each other)  Distinguish the position of the vehicle just after/ before a motorway intersection or ramp near the gates

  12. 12 EGNOS added value in urban roads True path ( Enhanced accuracy and “protection level” provided with EGNOS allow to:  Distinguish close/ parallel roads in various LTZ areas where different rules/ pricing schemes are applied  Distinguish roads in dense urban areas inside/ outside the LTZ areas  Monitor in real ‐ time vehicles itineraries and stops, in line with permits  Have a reliable positioning of urban regulated fleets

  13. 13 EGNOS opportunities in extra ‐ urban business cases EGNOS OS: Added value is the enhanced accuracy – Road charging Zero costs in new systems – Tracking & tracing of third ‐ party service fleets EGNOS OS suggested in new GNSS systems Added value: enhanced accuracy and guarantee/ qualification of position EGNOS CS/EDAS: Potential to bring economical benefits Road charging (i.e. willingness to pay) generated by claims reduction Possibly interesting for an ETC Service Provider

  14. 14 EGNOS opportunities in urban business cases (1/2) EGNOS OS: Added value is the – Tracking & tracing of touristic coaches enhanced accuracy – Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of Zero costs in new systems access/ circulation in LTZ zones EGNOS OS suggested in – Tracking & tracing of LTP fleets new GNSS systems – Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of For the LTP fleets, RSM is vehicles for goods delivery also evaluating its adoption in “ready” systems

  15. 15 EGNOS opportunities in urban business cases (2/2) Added value: enhanced accuracy and EGNOS CS/EDAS: guarantee/ qualification of position – Tracking & tracing of touristic coaches Potential for a regulated use that brings economical benefits (i.e. – Tracking & tracing/ willingness to pay) generated by monitoring of access/ revenues increase (thanks to new circulation in LTZ zones subscribers and correct behaviour of present subscribers, claims reduction – Tracking & tracing/ and efficient personnel operations, monitoring of vehicles for social benefits) goods delivery Regulated use requiring type approval for legal value Position guarantee perceived – Tracking & tracing of LTP interesting value by RSM, enabling fleets to qualify position data from the different LTP Service Providers

  16. 16 Key findings on EGNOS use for road (1/2) Positive feedbacks on EGNOS use from road operators: EGNOS OS added value is the enhanced accuracy at zero costs in new systems  EGNOS OS suggested in new GNSS systems for all extra ‐ urban and urban business cases EGNOS CS/EDAS added value is the enhanced accuracy and guarantee/ qualification, that has the potential to:  bring economical benefits (i.e. willingness to pay)  give service robustness for starting a type approval (i.e. legal use) The legal value/ regulated use requires a type approval, as for any other technology EGNOS CS/EDAS enabled solutions proven for road applications ready and easy to use

  17. 17 Key findings on EGNOS use for road (2/2) EGNOS CS/EDAS economical benefits depend on the business case Extra ‐ urban road applications:  Toll charger/ tracking & tracing of third ‐ party service fleets  ETC Service provider/ road charging Urban road applications:  City/ Tracking & tracing of touristic coaches  City/ Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of access/ circulation in LTZ zones  City/ Tracking & tracing/ monitoring of vehicles for goods delivery  City/ Tracking & tracing of LTP fleets

  18. 18 Key findings on Galileo Authentication opportunities for road Mainly in extra ‐ urban business cases Galileo Authentication:  Alone gives the capability to reduce frauds only for third ‐ party fleet monitoring (e.g. extra ‐ urban tracking & tracing of third ‐ party service fleet)  Combined with EGNOS CS/EDAS gives a more robust position so that to reduce claims and frauds (allowing to substitute the OBE sensors functions of present GPS ‐ based solution)
