GEAR UP’s parent messages for this quarter include: 1) earning college credit while still in high school and 2) financial literacy terms concerning postsecondary financial aid. Ad Advanced ed Placemen ent (AP) courses offer a student the

  • pportunity to earn college credit in high school by

taking an advanced course and making a qualifying score on the end of course exam. Each high school

  • ffers different courses. The course design is created by

College Board. Concurr rrent nt enrollment simply means that a high school student is “concurrently” enrolled in both high school and college courses. Each high school coordinates this

  • pportunity with the postsecondary site.

Dual l Credit dit affords the student an opportunity to simultaneously earn a high school class credit and a college credit. The grade received will be on a college transcript and the high school transcript. Each high school coordinates with the postsecondary site to provide dual credit offerings. Advanced Placement, Concurrent Credit, and Dual Credit

Some me Financia ial l Benef efits its of Dual l Cred edit it, , Concurren ent, , or AP:

  • Cost savings for room and board for each credit

hour that would have been incurred if living on campus

  • Cost savings for the course if the student scores a

qualifying score on the AP exam, because the student only pays for the AP exam, not tuition for the class

  • Costs savings of thousands of dollars. The student

can complete college at a faster rate because he/she begins with college credits, that if planned carefully, will count toward your child’s major.
