What are the opportunities and priorities?
There are several opportunities along the East Street Market area that will improve the existing physical environment, support existing businesses and community groups in the area and attract new enterprise. Physical and built environment There are opportunities to improve the existing fabric and public realm of the East Street Market area. A significant
The gateway at Walworth Road provides a particular potential for restoration
the layout of the Market and adding impactful signage to attract footfall. Other possibilities along East Street are to improve the quality of the public realm of the ‘neighbourhood corners’, enhancing the pedestrian environment and links to surrounding open spaces and community assets. The corner of East Street and Walworth Place, Blackwood Street and Morecambe Street, Brandon Street and Portland Street (adjacent to the new cycle route Quietway 7) are priority corners to focus on. To improve wayfinding, there are opportunities for signposts at these neighbourhood corners along with blank flank walls for signage and artwork celebrating the character of the area. Enterprise and entrepreneurship Improving the East Street Market stalls and creating a unique brand for the Market would attract more footfall and thus support the local economy. Changes to the Market layout should be tested and implemented to improve the visibility
as business support and visual merchandising could support and build resilience among local businesses in the area. Enabling meanwhile uses in vacant properties such as shops
but also attract new enterprise in the area. There are also
and other enterprises to trade in the Market by providing incentives and programming seasonal events. Participation and activity The forecourt of Nursery Row Park provides a significant
entertainment and temporary festivals. This will support existing emerging social hubs like Carnaval del Pueblo on East Street. Providing infrastructure to support temporary uses will support and encourage local community groups to programme and animate this site and encourage the wider neighbourhood of Walworth to engage with the East Street Market area. Priorities The prioirity should be to enhance East Street Market, support the traders and improve the relationship of the Market to the surrounding shops. Additionally, improvements to the gateways, neighbourhood corners, signage and the forecourt
active and sustainable high street.
