Summary Summary

Satellite observed nighttime lighting in China more than doubled

from 1992 to 2009 from 1992 to 2009.

The growth in lighting tracks growth in both GDP and population.
This pattern is typical of the countries undergoing rapid

d l ( i l i lb i l d h ) development (e.g. Vietnam, Algeria, Albania, Portugal and others).

Developed countries, like USA have stable lighting across the same

time period, perhaps due to improvements in lighting efficiency?

There is an indication that the growth of lighting in China slowed

due to the economic downturn that started in 2008.

At some point it is anticipated that growth in lighting in China will
