  2. 4/29/2015 AGENDA • Introductions • Development Committee Scenario #1 • Some Theory • Development Committee Scenario #2 • Some General Observations Materials www.developmentforconservation.com/ about ‐ us/resources Presentation Materials – RiverRally 20150502 Everything you need to know • The Development Committee CONTENT should be about DONORS – not activities • The Development Committee PROCESS should be about BOARD ‐ DONOR interactions – not staff reporting 1

  3. 4/29/2015 Everything you need to know • The Development Committee OUTCOMES are: – Sequencing: “What’s Next?” – Troubleshooting: “How do we work around problems that come up?” – Accountability: “Did we do what we said we would?” Frames of Reference • Fundraising is a BOARD responsibility • Organizations will (almost) always be more effective at fundraising when board members are involved. Frames of Reference • The Development Committee organizes the work of the board members and helps hold them accountable • Staff cannot hold board members accountable 2

  4. 4/29/2015 DC DC Dir Dir Dir Dir So What? • TALK about DONORS at meetings – Figure out ways to MEET them. – Review their files. – Plug them into organizational events. – Introduce them to organizational leaders. • Let the organization of events happen outside DC meetings. So What? • Leave meetings with each person having something tangible to do with a deadline. • The list of “somethings” is all the minutes you need. • DC Members report in at the next meeting, not only on their tasks and donors, but also on their “partners’” tasks and donors. • Always ask “What’s the next step?” 3

  5. 4/29/2015 ALSO • Create space at DC meetings and at Board meetings to tell stories. • Roleplay when people have trouble. – Re ‐ enact phone calls using chairs back to back. – Don’t expect to have all the answers. Seek group support, ideas, and afterthoughts. • Keep good notes, and keep good files. Services Assessment, Planning, Training, Coaching You can raise more money for your organization – I can help. fundraisinghelp@sbcglobal.net 608/239 ‐ 5006 4

  6. D AVID A LLEN I am a non-profit organizational development consultant. I work with organization boards to help their members learn how to be better leaders and advocates. My background includes 30 years working in membership fundraising, major donor development, communications, and marketing. I worked for about half that time for Nature Conservancy (TNC) chapters in Oregon, Texas, and Wisconsin. In addition to my duties for the individual chapters, I served TNC as an internal fundraising consultant and major donor development trainer. In 2000, served as the vice-president of operations for the Wisconsin-based, international conservation organization Sand County Foundation, a position I held through mid-2009. Gathering Waters Conservancy, a land trust service agency based in Wisconsin, called me in 2002 to ask whether I would be interested in teaching a seminar for Wisconsin land trusts on major donor development. From 2002, then, through 2009, I consulted on a nights and weekends basis with just a few clients each year. In March of 2009, I launched my consulting business full-time using the name Development for Conservation . Also in 2009, I partnered with Peter McKeever and Nancy Moore to form Conservation Consulting Group. Together we help land trusts prepare for accreditation by providing assessment, planning, and leadership coaching services. I consider myself a strategic thinker, problem solver, facilitator, educator, and program developer who brings a particular passion for conservation and the environment.
