What is a determiner?

A determiner is a word that comes before a noun and gives extra information about the noun. A determiners tells you if it a general thing or a specific thing.

Example:

There is a chicken. There is one chicken. There is the chicken.

We can class determiners into seven different categories.

Determiner type 1: articles

Definite and indefinite articles In a sentence: I love to go into your kitchen, so I can browse through all of the recipe books. The is a specific determiner: it refers to a particular noun/s that the speaker thinks the listener knows about e.g. the recipe books. Definite –

In a sentence: When I first got to the zoo, I saw there was an elephant eating grass. A and an are general determiners: they refer to one non-specific noun that the speaker thinks the listener does not know about e.g. a chick or an elephant. Indefinite -

Determiner type 2: quantifiers

These words give us more information about how many of the noun there are without giving a specific number. In a sentence: You have had several/lots of/some/many/enough sweets now, so put the rest away!

Example:

Determiner type 3: numbers

Cardinal numbers - give specific information about exactly how many of the noun there are. In a sentence: We are delighted to announce there were thirty-five applications.

Example:

thousands two million

Ordinal numbers refer to distribution of the noun. In a sentence: This will be my first/third/next/last slice of pizza!

Example:

Determiner type 4 - distributive

In a sentence: Unsurprisingly, all of the school council voted against shortening lunch time.

Example:

This type of determiner is used to give more specific information about a group or individual members

  • f the group. They tell us how people or things are distributed or shared.

Determiner type 5: possessive adjectives

In a sentence: Don’t worry, I’m going in his/our/their/your car.

Example:

These types of determiners tell us who the noun belongs to.

Determiner type 6: demonstrative

In a sentence: Would you like these/those trainers, Mario?

Demonstrative determiners are used to demonstrate the identity of a noun.

Determiner type 7 – defining words

In a sentence: Whose tickets are these?

Example:

what which whose

These types of determiners are used to ask a question about a noun – the determiner indicates which person or thing is being referred to. When used as a determiner, – Which asks about a specific group of people or things. – What asks a general question about a noun. – Whose asks a question about possession of a noun.
