DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE AGEING SOCIETY Europe is facing unprecedented demographic changes ageing population � low birth rates � changing family structures � Migration � � Population ageing is a generalised process across EU Member States – CENTRAL EUROPE follows the same trend � Eurostat’s population projections foresee that the ageing process will continue in future decades DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE is recognised as a key challenge for CENTRAL EUROPE

CENTRAL EUROPE PROGRAMME & DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE Demographic change � Addressed by transnational cooperation projects funded within the CENTRAL EUROPE Programme � More than 10% of 101 running projects linked to demographic change � Appr. € 20 Million ERDF allocated to approved projects addressing problems related to demographic change Key focus of approved projects on demographic change: � Minimising negative effects of demographic change on society by developing innovative tools that improve the inclusion of the elderly and other disadvantaged groups � Making shrinking regions more attractive by accommodating needs of the local population and adapting infrastructure accordingly – thus increasing social inclusion and avoiding brain-drain

CONCLUSIONS � Addressing the territorial effects of demographic and social change on urban and regional development is one of the goals supported by the Central Europe Programme � Transnational cooperation is perceived as a highly relevant approach for tackling the ageing related issues � Several exciting projects are already being supported that are actively addressing the issue of demographic change and ageing of the society
