In health, financial services, utilities, retail and government, it is possible to set achievable standards for the usability of forms, instructions, contracts, bills, letters, web sites and apps. There are no technical barriers to achieving these standards. But many organisations still fail to set or meet these standards. Why is this so and what can we do about it?

Achievable Standards in Information Design

Over the last 50 years, as part of an international community of researchers and designers, I have been intimately involved in the work to answer this question. We have amassed a substantial body of evidence and practical know-how so that today it is possible to claim that good information design can not only bring about improvements but can also achieve measurable results at a high level.

What is good information design?

One of the great challenges facing designers is creating designs that will work in many different contexts. There have been many advances in achieving this aim, but there are also many limitations associated with the current technologies and ways of thinking.

In many design projects the greatest risk to a successful outcome arise from the clash of interests among stakeholders. Often 50% or more of project effort goes into managing stakeholders. What are the lessons from experience? How can we usefully think about this management process? Based on many years of experience in project management, I would like to share with you some of my experiences and thoughts on this subject.
