  4. Origins of Cycling Without Age • International movement established in 2012 by Ole Kassow of Copenhagen, Denmark. • https://youtu.be/O6Ti4qUa-OU?t=13 • Joyful connection built on the simple experience of a shared bike ride. • The CWA program grew in popularity and quickly spread to 28 countries around the world. There are currently 225 chapters of Cycling without Age with 8000 volunteer pilots.

  5. Origins of Cycling Without Age • The Grey Escape is a documentary about the voyage of 10 bikes travelling from Ronde, Denmark to Avendal, Norway. This 250 mile trip took place over 5 days and 4 nights. • https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thegreyescape

  6. 5 Principles of Cycling Without Age • Generosity: Taking 1 or 2 less abled people out for a side is a simple act of kindness that anyone can do. • Slow Cycling: Cycling slowly allows people to take in the environment around them and the chance to engage with other community members who may be curious about the program. • Storytelling: The design of the trishaw allows older people to share their stories with pilots and for pilots to bear witness to these stories thereby creating a bridge between generations. • Relationships: CWA promotes relationships between generations, pilots and passengers, long-term care staff and family members. Strengthening these relationships enhances quality of life for residents. • Without Age: The cycling experience helps to ensure that people do not lose touch with all the possibilities of life due to mobility limitations.

  8. Bruyère Continuing Care Experience • Gary Bradshaw, avid cyclist and local Orleans resident, was travelling in Denmark and saw the program in operation. • Upon returning to Canada he did a bit of research to discover that there were no programs in Ottawa. • Gary approached Bruyère Continuing Care about starting a CWA Chapter in Ottawa. • Cycling Without Age was launched on July 27, 2016 • http://ctv.news/8Wc9HMR

  9. Funding • The biggest hurdle is the $10,000 bike cost. • Donations from the Residence St. Louis Bazaar funds and money raised at a Golf Tournament for the Bruyère Village paid for our first bike. • Currently working with the Bruyère Foundation to raise money for a bike in the downtown location. • “Petal Pedal” is a fundraiser during the Ottawa Tulip Festival. All proceeds will go toward the purchase cost of a second bike for our downtown location.

  10. Risk Management • Insurance for the bike and volunteers • Waiver forms for pilots, residents, tenants • Specialized “Cycling Without Age” orientation for volunteers offered. This hybrid model includes a general orientation with a theoretical component and a practical component. • Checklist reviewed prior to piloting the bike. A buddy system is set up for the first trip. Staff assist to pick up the resident in Long Term Care.

  11. Logistics • Completion of all the waiver forms • Scheduling in the outlook calendar for the pilots • Scheduling in the unit agendas • “Game day” decisions • Weather watch • Cancellations • Bike maintenance

  12. The Cycling Without Age Research Project • Project was evaluated using a framework that includes surveys and daily rides. • Pilots completed a pre and post survey about their interest in joining the program and to capture their full experience. • Daily log rides were completed by the pilots after each ride. These captured ride details and resident response. • The results of the 11 week project were very positive

  13. Results of the Research Project • Target participation was 20% but this was exceeded and was 26%. 46 Residents were involved in the cycling. • 99% of the satisfaction surveys indicated that the ride was extremely enjoyable or very enjoyable. • The most common complaint was that the rides were too short. • 34 volunteers completed the CWA training -30 % were new recruits -20 went on to pilot the bike (7 new pilots) -pilots logged 121 hours over 3 months

  14. Celebrating the Human Spirit Award • The Canadian College of Health Leaders will be hosting a special event to recognize outstanding leaders for their achievements and contributions, as part of the College's National Awards Program. • Bruyère’ s Therapeutic Support Services will be receiving the Celebrating the Human Spirit Award for the Cycling Without Age program they launched at Saint-Louis Residence and the Bruyère Village last summer! • Celebrating the Human Spirit Award recognizes and honours the meaningful contributions of individuals or teams, who provide health services, for acts of caring and compassion that go above and beyond the call of duty, which inspire others and have a profound and lasting impact.

  15. What’s next…. Next steps • Offer a refresher course for volunteer pilots • Revise list of active residents • Recruit and train new pilots for both LTC sites • Revise 2017 communication and advertising • Prepare for a launch at our Elisabeth Bruyère site
