Important Terms to Know

  • Host School: where you are taking your course
  • Home School: Chan School, where you are receiving your degree
  • Cross-Registration Petition: the online/ paper form that you submit to let

the Registrar’s Office know you want to take a specific course

  • Harvard Faculties: all of the Harvard Schools
  • Cancel Petition v. Drop Course: canceling a petition is removing the

submitted petition from your cross-registration list (before it has ANY approvals). Dropping a course is done through the Chan School via a paper form, once you have 1+ approvals

What courses will be eligible toward my degree?

For a cross-registered course to count toward a HSPH degree and to appear on the transcript, the course:

  • Must be a graduate-level course
  • Must be relevant to your degree program
  • Must be taken for Pass/Fail or ordinal credit
  • Must be approved by your Advisor and Department

Student Responsibilities

  • Cross-registration is not allowed at the undergraduate level, Harvard Extension,

Summer school, and Radcliffe Seminar courses.

  • Undergraduate courses at FAS are those 100 and below
  • Can cross-register for a maximum of 1/2 of their total credits per semester. A student

who wishes to cross-register for more than 1/2 of their total credits in a semester must submit a General Petition (this is different than a cross-registration petition).

  • Students are not allowed to register for courses that overlap nor register for courses
  • n separate campuses that end and start within 10 minutes of each other. Times are

take exclusively from the HU Course Catalog.

  • The student must register for a cross-listed course within their home institution.

Petitioning into Harvard Faculties

  • Be familiar with and abide by all General Policies as well as host and home school

specific policies.

  • Decide which course(s) you would like to take via the Harvard University Course

Catalog.

  • Check the Cross-Registration Credit Conversion Table to make sure you know how

course’s credits will be converted at your home school.

  • Communicate with the course’s instructor to ensure you understand and meet the

prerequisites prior to petitioning.

  • Submit your cross registration petition via the Harvard University Course Catalog, no

later than the earlier add/drop/change deadline.

  • After the Harvard Chan School’s add/drop/change deadline, non-Harvard Chan

School courses will take approximately 2 weeks to appear on a student’s A.L.I.C.E. registration.

  • At the end of the semester, all grades will be sent to the Harvard Chan School from

the host school.

Cross-Registering Into MIT & Tufts

  • Be familiar with and abide by all General Policies as well as host and home school specific

policies.

  • Decide which course(s) you would like to take via the MIT Course Catalog, Tufts – Friedman

Course Catalog, or Tufts – Fletcher Course Catalog.

  • Check the Cross-Registration Credit Conversion Table to ensure you understand how the credits

will be converted at your home institution.

  • Communicate with the course’s instructor to ensure that you understand the prerequisites prior to

petitioning.

  • Complete 2 Non-Harvard Cross-Registration Form, and secure all necessary signatures. One

copy will be kept at the Harvard Chan School Registrar’s Office, and the original will be returned to the host school. Students cannot submit petitions via the Harvard University Course Catalog.

  • After the Harvard Chan School’s add/drop/change deadline, non-Harvard Chan School courses

will take approximately 2 weeks to appear on a student’s A.L.I.C.E. registration.

  • At the end of the semester, the host school with send your grades to the Harvard Chan School.

Canceling a Petition Dropping a Course

  • Submit a completed Cross-Registration Drop/Change form
  • To the Harvard Chan School Registrar’s Office
  • Earlier of the add/drop/change deadlines of the home and host schools, for

that semester.

  • The petition can only be cancelled by the Harvard Chan School Registrar’s

Office.

  • The cross-registration liaison annotates the petition as “dropped” on the

Cross-Registration Portal. Until the course is noted as “dropped,” the process is not complete.

  • Students who do not abide by these rules when canceling a petition or fail

to drop a course or cancel a petition may be subject to a fee of $80.00, receive a WD for the course, or be responsible for the tuition.

Having a Successful Cross-Registration Experience

  • ONLY submit petitions for courses you intend to take. More petitions are

not better.

  • Submit all drop/change forms by the earliest add/drop/ change deadline
  • Make sure there are no time conflicts in your schedule. All time conflicts are

assessed by the HU Course Catalog. Make sure what the syllabus/ or instructor says matches.

  • When in doubt, come to the Registrar’s Office with your questions
  • Petition the correct way! Do not assume you are enrolled/ will be enrolled if

you have not properly petitioned.
