Infectious Disease An infectious disease is caused by a microorganism, such as a bacterium, virus or protozoan that is not normally found in the body. Some but not all infectious diseases are contagious, meaning they can spread from person to person.

The Components

Disease

The pathogen or infectious organism- Virus, Bacteria, parasite The agent necessary for disease to occur Variability in pathogenicity ( Ability to cause disease)

Pathogen

Refers to the Human that can get the disease Factors intrinsic to the host, called Risk Factors, influence our exposure and susceptibility: Genetic susceptibility Immunologic Status Age Presence of Diseases

Host

Extrinsic factors that affect the agent and the opportunity for exposure: Physical Factors: Climate and biologic factors Socioeconomic Factors: Crowding, Sanitation, and the availability of Health Services.

The Benefit of Wearing a Mask

In an editorial published July 14, 2020 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the CDC reviewed the latest science and affirms that cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities.

The Challenge of the Corona Virus

  • Not well understood
  • Severity of illness is very variable

– Asymptomatic – Symptoms like a common cold – Symptomatic, but can treat at home – Hospitalization required – Can be fatal

  • Many asymptomatic carriers

Testing

  • Sensitivity

– In medical diagnosis, test sensitivity is the ability of a test to correctly identify those with the disease (true positive rate)

  • Specificity

– test specificity is the ability of the test to correctly identify those without the disease (true negative rate).

Types of Testing for the Disease

A viral test tells you if you have a current infection. An antibody test might tell you if you had a past infection. An antibody test might not show if you have or had a current infection because it can take 1–3 weeks after infection for your body to make antibodies. Having antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 might provide protection from getting infected with the virus again. If it does, we do not know: How much protection the antibodies might provide or How long this protection might last.

Treatment

  • Supportive

– Fluids, rest, respiratory support

  • Medication

– Antiviral, Dexamethasone , Anti- inflammatory, Hydroxychloroquine – Antibody

  • Immune based therapy, Convalescent plasma

– Vaccine
