College of Engineering

Office of Admissions Office of Admissions

§ One of the most prestigious and smallest schools of engineering at a major research university in the U.S. and amongst UC campuses § Very selective for transfer students seeking admission § Seeks to provide its students with a strong theoretical background plus opportunities for hands-on training and applied research needed to become leaders and innovators § 5 majors available: chemical, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering, and computer science

slide-15
SLIDE 15

§ Mathematical Sciences, B.S.

§

A degree for those who enjoy working with numbers and equations; a hands-on major which focuses on how to solve real-world mathematical quandaries, particularly those with applications to the physical sciences and engineering.

§ Mathematics, B.S.

§

Suitable if you wish to study the STUFF of mathematics. As opposed to a computational approach many are exposed to in lower division calculus classes, this degree dives well beyond the shallow waters of formulas and calculators into a world of mathematical theory.

§ Mathematics, B.A.

§

This major has two possible emphases, the Liberal Arts and High School Teaching. You may opt for this major, particularly the Liberal Arts track, if you are considering a double major. A degree in math shows employers that you have quantitative skills and that you can think logically to solve problems.

Mathematics Major Selection

§ Meet basic transfer selection criteria § Required major preparation for Mathematics B.A./B.S. and

Mathematical Sciences B.S. majors must be completed before transferring to UCSB:

§

First and second semester calculus

§

Required pre-major GPA of at least 2.75

§

No individual grade lower than ‘C’ in major prep

Overall Theme

§ The department is requiring two semesters of coursework at a

community college (or other institution) with letter grades of C or higher, and a 2.75 major prep GPA in those courses.

Office of Admissions

slide-19
SLIDE 19

AP and IB Exams

§ AP and IB exams alone will not satisfy major prep screening since

the department wants to see two major prep college level courses on the academic record with letter grades

§ AP Calculus AB with 3 or higher = Math 3A § AP Calculus BC with 3 or higher = Math 3A and 3B § IB HL Math with 5 or higher = Math 3A and 3B § For the students partially or fully meeting the calculus

requirement via exam, they will still need to have two major preparation math courses with letter grade C or better and 2.75 major prep GPA

Office of Admissions

slide-20
SLIDE 20

GPA Questions

  • 1. Student took Calculus I and II and does not meet major prep

GPA - in this case we can use advanced major prep math courses in GPA to help them reach a 2.75

  • 2. What if a student does not have a GPA due to passing AP

exams? – the student would need to take two major prep math courses to meet the GPA requirement

  • 3. Can a student take a course for Pass/No Pass grading? – Only 1

Pass grade is okay, but the student would need to take two major prep math courses with a letter grade to meet the GPA requirement

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Other Notes

§ Business calculus courses are NOT appropriate for the math

  • major. A student must complete 3A if they have taken business

calculus.

§ Only two colleges have a current Math 8 articulation § Mt. San Antonio College § Santa Rosa Junior College § Advanced level courses (linear algebra, differential equations,

multivariable calculus) can be used to help a student reach the 2.75 major prep GPA, but they will not hurt a student as long as they meet the 2.75 major prep GPA with calculus I and calculus II.

§ Multivariable calculus is often called calculus III at the

community colleges

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Duplication

Office of Admissions

§ UC will not award credit for a repeat of the same course, if a C or better grade is earned –regardless of where it is taken § EXAMPLE:

§ A “C” in Music 100: Music Appreciation cannot be repeated with an “A” in

Music 1: Music Appreciation

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Limitations

Office of Admissions

§ Two similar courses, each is transferable:

§ If a student takes both, UC will award credit for the course that most benefits the student (either through grades or units) § Common example: College Algebra and Precalculus

§ Two series of courses:

§ UC will award credit for only one series § Common example: General Physics and Physics for Engineering

§ Other common limitations: PE (4 semester/6 quarter units) and ESL (8 semester/12 quarter units) § NOTE: If courses are limited with each other, the total transferable units will be reduced

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Language of Instruction (LOI)

Office of Admissions

Students who complete high school through ninth grade where the language of instruction was other than English:

§ Will not receive credit for lower division language courses or IB/AP exams in that language § May receive credit for courses focusing on the study of literature

slide-30

The 7-course pattern for current/former UC students

Office of Admissions

§ Students are considered eligible at admission if they are current or former UC students. This means that the 7-course pattern is not required. § For selection, some UCs require the 7-course

  • pattern. This means that many students will still

need to complete the pattern. At UCSB, we do not require the pattern for admission. § Note that in all cases, major prep and other selection criteria still apply.
