  1. CONTINUOUS LEARNING 2020 La Conner Elementary School

  2. How’d we get here? ◦ March: Focus for learning was on practice and review Focus for district was on ensuring basic needs were provided ◦ April: Focus on gently increasing learning 1-2 activities per week for 3 week (Spring Break) ◦ Student access to learning devices and materials ◦ May & June: Focus on “Continuous Learning” under these Guiding Principles Keeping students at the center, engaging families ◦ Designing learning for equity and access ◦ Assess student learning to grow what they know ◦

  3. “Continuous Learning” What it is What it isn’t ◦ Recreating the classroom online/virtually ◦ “homeschooling” ◦ Hours of screen time ◦ Covering all content in an area ◦ Daily assignments or individual lessons with grades attached

  4. “Continuous Learning” What it is What it isn’t ◦ Focused on progress and learning ◦ Recreating the classroom online/virtually ◦ Connection and building relationships ◦ “homeschooling” ◦ Meaningful and engaging ◦ Hours of screen time ◦ Check-ins with families ◦ Covering all content in an area ◦ Encourages student self-assessment ◦ Daily assignments or individual lessons with grades attached ◦ Like coaching ◦ Flexible and student-centered ◦ Adaptable and appropriate for individual students ◦ Concept “big-idea” driven ◦ Active and experience-based ◦ Reviewing and retaining what’s been gained

  5. Recommended Guidelines for maximum student commitment each day: ◦ Pre-K: 30 minutes 3-5 minute chunks ◦ K – 1 st : 45 minutes 5-10 minute chunks ◦ 2 nd – 3 rd : 60 minutes 10-15 minute chunks ◦ 4 th -5 th : 90 minutes 20 minute chunks

  6. How parents can support student learning: ◦ Stay in touch with teachers ◦ Reach out to them for support and guidance; tap into their professional expertise! ◦ Identify and encourage your child’s areas of interest ◦ Look for ways to make learning fun ◦ Establish a daily routine ◦ Get up and go to sleep at a consistent time every day ◦ Set a morning and afternoon “learning time”, with learning broken up into recommended chunks, separated by play, exercise, chores, etc.

  7. What to expect moving forward: Learning materials will be distributed and returned every Friday – Pick-up & drop-off @ 10:00am – 2:00pm ◦ Starting now, more consistently in May ◦ Teacher contact information and expectations are posted on their school webpage ◦ Change... This is all new to EVERYONE, so our best intentions and plans will need to be adapted as we learn what works and what doesn’t ◦ Your feedback is CRITICAL!

  8. This is really stressful…

  9. This is really stressful… Try to remember ◦ This is not the “new normal”, this will pass ◦ Give yourselves LOTS of GRACE! ◦ Everyone is grieving and experiencing loss ◦ You are not “homeschooling”, you are crisis schooling ◦ you have a school community who is eager to support and encourage you and your children! ◦ If you crumble on the couch one day, your child will still learn ◦ In the big picture, these weeks out of school will total less than 3% of their time in school ◦ Learning losses will be absorbed over time
